aireshelta.....pointless?
« on: September 07, 2006, 10:42:38 PM »
I was just looking on the sturt SES website and found a full webpage devoted to their aireshelta. I don't know about others, but I see this thing just as an expensive inflatable tent. It doesn't appear to have any stand out features or, quite frankly, a point. I dunno, I just feel that this thing is a pretty big waste of time, but whatever.

its here:

god your a filtered

that piece of equipment has been used numerous times to provide shelter for forensics teams, to preserve crime scenes and major crash scenes...

i think youll find its a very versatile piece of gear

---------------------------------------------------------

ive said it in so many other threads.... if you guys had just a little bit of knowledge about what the SES does, and where when and how... then you could stop embaressing yourselves...

(this applies to a few but not all members of this board... just the ones with big mouths )

whatever. Its just that whenever i've seen it its just doing jobs that a marquee would do. But at the jobs you described, fair cop.

btw, im not a filtered, im just interested.

That doesn't explain why you need an aireshelta... couldn't you just use a marquee for those things?

This thread...... pointless?

Cfs-firey - Im guessing the very quick set up and versatility...

This is from the website re: its uses..  (Quite frankly, what a fantastic piece of equipment)..

(airshelta) has been used at many incidents since then including searches, murder scenes, other types of crime scenes, bushfires, as a triage centre and recently at the West Lakes building collapse. Aireshelta provides victims, Police, medical retrieval teams, rescue and other emergency service teams, instant protection, privacy and a degree of physical comfort not otherwise available.....

^ Instant protection, would suggest its quick set up, and hey, if it was keeping me from getting drenched / heatstroke out on a job I wouldn't complanin !

Errr Hello,

Why would you knock a piece of equipment designed for easy erection and use,by ALL emergency service crews. Its uses are numerous and a marquee isnt always readily accessible, the airshelta is available for immediate turnout when required by SAPOL,SAAS,CFS etc.

Not every brigade has a PPV either but ill bet most brigades would like one,if they knew it was an invaluable tool when used correctly :-D :-D

One of the many differences is that the AirShelta does not need to be pegged down. Very handy when you need to erect shelta over concrete or asphalt.

Because the trailer contains the air-compressor and weights, you just unfold and inflate. It is very quick and more stable in high winds than a ordinary tent.

Was used at Pirie St bombing to preserve privacy of the victims during retrieval. Ambulances can drive through it.

Sometimes large tents are better for long timeframe incidents, but short term and on hard surfaces, the AirShelta is better.

But each tool has good and bad points.

Clearly that was an explosion but certainly not a bombing.

As for the airshelta great tool and an excellent resource. May not be used often butinvaluable when needed.

The other big advantage is that the whole shelta can be moved by the crew fully inflated.

See the picture on http://www.sturtrescue.com.au/gallery20.htm from Mercury05 exercise where the Shelta was moved over a MFS truck without be disassembled.

Didn't Sturt get those big hovering lights, too? You know, the type used at Thredbo? I just looked at their website and was somewhat stunned at the number of vehicles and trailers they have. Surely there are other units in the SES who need new vehicles and are still waiting.

If only all units/brigades had such massive budgets to buy cool stuff like that instead of having to beg and scrape for ancient equipment to be replaced or fixed...

Having said that... the aireshelta is nice and big and easy to use... but it really does seem that only the one unit in the state is really getting kitted out with cool equipment. Is this because the SES CEO belongs to that unit?

All this cool stuff, has been funded by grants from various government and commuity organisations..........   just hard work put in by our units management team  to get  them.

There is nothing stopping anyone from applying for them

Also look in The Advertiser as they advertise when grants are available, but not for operational equipment.Items such as PC's and  laptops, data projectors, rideons etc no problems :-D

if you actualyl look around there are quite a few units that have similar amoutns of gear/appliances. Sturt SES are a USAR unit and so they have some extra toys...

perhaps if other units had such good web sites this would be more obvious to everyone....

having said that, i do sometimes wodner if Sturt have a couple too many vehicles
