Survivors freed after smash
From: AAP
June 14, 2006
ONE firefighter was killed and four others injured when their fire engine smashed into a tree in Sydney's southwest.

The pumper was en route to an urgent 000 callout from Macquarie Fields fire station when it clipped a semi-trailer on Cambridge Road and ploughed into a tree shortly before 10am (AEST), police said.
Emergency crews were on the scene within minutes, but it took almost two hours to free the last of the four survivors from the wreckage, NRMA CareFlight said.

The driver was flown to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition with multiple fractures to his legs and pelvis, as well as abdominal injuries.

Another of his colleagues was also critically injured and was taken by ambulance to Liverpool Hospital.

The other survivors escaped with minor injuries and shock, and were also taken by ambulance to Liverpool Hospital. The truck driver was not harmed.

NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) Commissioner Greg Mullins and a brigades chaplain went to the scene.

CareFlight spokesman Ian Badham said the accident was especially emotional for responding local ambulance crews, who knew the victims.

"It's part of your own community," Mr Badham said.

"They might be wearing a different uniform, but suddenly you are looking after those you're used to seeing on the other side of the job. It's very difficult."

NSWFB would not comment on the accident, saying it was now the subject of an internal investigation.

"It's all subject to investigation and I can't say anything more at this stage," Inspector Gordon Boath said.

I realise it's speculation but was mentioned on the news that the truck was slowing to pullover for the appliance when the trailer of the truck slipped sideways clipping the appliance.

A very unfortunate thing to happen , hopefully they get well soon

The truck was heading the other way so shouldnt really have needed to move over.  It seems the firfighter who died was a S.O who was filling in for the usual S.O while he was on leave.  I assume the front passenger is always for S.O.

On the news last night they showed pictures and all the damage was on the drivers side, he was very lucky to survive.

Even worse is the call they were going to was a false alarm at the army base.

yeah, speculation leads to confusion. confusion leads to fear. fear leads to anger. anger leads to hate it does. speculate, you must not. official releases, you must seek.

Investigators probe firefighter's death. 15/06/2006.
ABC News Online

[This is the print version of story http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200606/s1663327.htm]

Last Update: Thursday, June 15, 2006. 7:12am (AEST)

Investigators probe firefighter's death

Two separate investigations are under way into the death of a firefighter on the way to an emergency in Sydney's south-west yesterday.

Station Officer Stephen Richardson, 46, died when the fire truck he was in hit a semi-trailer and crashed into a tree at Glenfield.

Four of his crew were injured, one seriously.

Station Officer Richardson joined the New South Wales Fire Brigade almost 20 years ago.

During his career he received several awards including a Unit Commendation for Meritorious Service for taking part in the rescue of Stuart Diver during the Thredbo disaster.

He served at several fire stations in Sydney's south-west and was working as the relieving Station Officer at Liverpool.

A spokeswoman for the Fire Brigade says as well as a police investigation, the Fire Brigade has started an internal investigation and WorkCover has been advised.

From the Advrtiser today

"FIREFIGHTERS DIE"
'Four german volunteer firefighters died on their way to a training exercise when their fire engine hit a car and a tree.  The four dead were aged between 20 and 22.  Three other firefighters and the 35 year old driver of the car were seriously injured.  The firefighters were unaware the callout was an exercise."

A RURAL Fire Service (RFS) volunteer is being airlifted to Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital after being struck by a falling tree on the New South Wales south coast.

The 46-year-old woman was taking part in a back-burning operation at Ulladulla about 4pm (AEST) today when a tree fell on her, rescue helicopter paramedics said.
The woman was taken to a local hospital suffering suspected spinal injuries.
