..DEVELOPING: ONE youth has been apprehended and houses around a Kilburn plastics factory have been evacuated after a disastrous fire took hold tonight.
Police have allegedly apprehended a youth over the incident.
A 1km air exclusion zone is in place above the fire.
At least 88 firefighters are on the scene, working in three seperate sectors.
The MFS is working with Port Adelaide Enfield Council to relay water from the council depot.
The fire is well advanced, burning plastic pallets inside the factory.
Two Environmental Protection officers are filming the toxic fumes, which are blowing in a northeasterly direction.
It was believed the fire started in two metal containers containing plastics for reycyling.
Concerns about toxic fumes blowing east towards Prospect Rd prompted police to start clearing the area about 7.20pm.
Shortly before 7.15pm, three explosions were heard from the fire.
The fire is threatening to take hold in hundreds of bales of recycled plastic and is also threatening a LPG tank nearby.
Fifteen houses near the factory have been evacuated, but no one has been injured so far.
The huge blaze is causing traffic chaos in the inner-northern suburbs, with traffic jams on Prospect, Kilburn and Grand Junction roads and several crashes.
The fire started in Plastics Granulating Services, on Inwood Ave, about 5.50pm, sending a thick plume of black smoke across the northern suburbs.
A witness said one of the factory's workers saw three youths with skateboards jumping a rear fence and fleeing moment after the fire started.
Up to 30 MFS appliances are battling the blaze, however they are reporting serious problems with water supply.
Flames about 40m high are burning into the sky, and the base of the fire is at least 40m wide.
The fire is right next to Housing Trust homes and any residents who have not been evacuated are advised to stay indoors with their windows closed.
Meanwhile, two MFS appliances battled a kiln fire in a factory in Camden Park.
It's believed the fire started in timber resin in a factory on Mooringie Ave about 7pm.
