What is the Role and responsibility of the CFS at an incident such as this?
SAPOL and SAAS would be dealing with the situation yes?
Why do CFS get responded to something like this?

Standby for fire cover at the direction of SAPOL. Depends on the threat, gas, flammable liquid, etc.

I would agree with you there, our unit has been responded to a siege situation as they were concerned that he was going to set fire to the house

Our brigade has also attended to "Assist Police" calls for persons threatening self harm - eg. with a can of petrol and a match.

Goes without saying that potentially could mean the diference between life and death if the Firies are on scene BEFORE he lights up!

Yeh remember that one Al, cockroach with a poor self image ,way unhappy took hours to talk him down, apparently humans had been tormenting him by putting him in the freezer for days on end, then taking great delight when he eventually revived only to do it again. It wasnt until we let him know that his kind were likely to be the only survivors of a nuclear holocaust that he perked up and put down the syringe and then a reeeal creepy look came across his disgusting bug face and a maniacal laugh burst forth. :-D

 :?
what exactly did they expect you to do with him?
pop him into an over-drum & deliver him to FMC ?
sharp-shoot the syringe with a 64mm ?
threaten to beat him up if he didn't hurry up & do it ?
 :?
the mind boggles.
admittedly the mind should have put itself to bed hours ago.
but it still boggles.

Dunno what they wanted us to do? Was treated as a Hazmat job!  He went troppo anyhow and did it but came to no significant harm just started threatning anyone within sight.

One of those jobs you look back on and have a chuckle to yourself.

Thinking back it wasn't pesticide it was round up or something similar.

Yes  - it is SAAS and SAPOL job - but being in a garage - trying to gas himself?  Don't you lot have fans that can blow lots of air in? unless he wants to blow himself up - in which case you've got lots of water?

if all else fails...there's a 50% chance that the paramedics who turn up will be female...and they always appreciate the eye candy.....

having said that tho....is there any eye candy in CFS??

In SAAS up here? - I don't know :| (mostly old blokes :-D ) & none of them look like Fredie!
However in CFS I'd say there is :-D
Trouble is I've got two daughters about the same age :-( (And they know it - thats the trouble in country towns) & my current partner is a member of the unit as well - so must be professional at all times
Ah to be young again

Obviously a HAZMAT, whether he spills the crap somewhere and it has to be cleaned up, or he actually injects himself, thereby making himself the HAZMAT, chance of contaminated vomit, off-gassing etc...

Years ago when I was in CFA we where called to a selfharm it was in the middle of winter snow was falling this guy had a knife to his throat and wanted to end it all...After two hours of waiting for police to attend and with it getting very cold and the ambos also wanting to go home our first LT at the time got on the PA and said just filtered do it we want to go home....with that the guy came down and was taking away by ambos....

There have been many cases of people taking pesticides and ambo crews taking them to hospital only to find that down the road they have had to stop as they have been overcome with what he person taken..

So the consensus is to pop him into an over-drum for the ride up to FMC ?  :-P

you could put him in a drum....we'd put him in a body bag-

....his head would still be sticking out...

I prefer the drum idea perosnally....logistically would make it easier - just stick him on the next TOLL truck going thru...

A few years back a fella drank a whole heap of very bad stuff, SAAS didn't wait until we arrived to go get him. they packed him up put him in the ambulance then put him in the chopper.

It was found after, that the stuff he drank was able to be absorbed through the skin etc etc, the ambulance and helicopter had to be fully stripped down and cleaned causing the chopper to be grounded for a few days. All because of some over zealous people who were hell bent on treating him without knowing the full implications of the situation.

So i guess wether it's injected, ingested whatever, there is a reason why fire is called.

bang on the money big al.

conversely - have been to some suspect poisonings where firey's have given us grief because when we called them we mentioned poisons/standby HAZMAT - so they rolled up with 6 appliances to find that we only wanted them there for some advice as to whether or not decon needed to occur!

Should be able to get that info through Poisons Info Centre 131126  24/7
MFS comms should be able to tell you over the phone. (One presumes that
MFS comms are able to look up the chemical number in their copy of the
HazChem guide that we carry in our trucks?)

Chinese whispers Alan

we have non-medical monkeys in our comms - so asking them to ask Fire for advice is a far too risky for a "risk adverse" call-centre that SAAS runs!

Poisons is fine...when you can get through!  last time I rang them I was on hold for close to 20 mins.....

Our SOT also has access to the same databases that SAMFS use - but again - the earlier we have the access to the info the better...hence the reason SAAS comms generally turns the firies out on initial reciept of the call.  (plus it stops you lot on here having a whinge about how long it took us to call you!)

Could also be to get access to the garage if necessary. We were called to a similar incident a few years ago where the guy had locked himself in the garage and police asked for us in case they needed to force entry.

If they can read you should be able to give them a UN number & name & they
should be able to read the info out to you. Or ring MFS direct on 000/112.

THAT is useful to know. Never had to call them myself.
Number was drummed into us at various 1st aid courses.
Suspect now by people who also never called it...

won't work.  We'll still whinge.  Everyone needs a hobby.  :-D
Speaking of which... I note that paging response delays seem to be waaaayyy
down on what they were even a few months ago. We're even getting to crashes
before the ambo's now. Sometimes. Come to think of it, we're even getting
called, which is itself a change.
