i use Adamtalk, works great...proves to be a great cost saver, but thatll probably change...someday.

Keep the Telstra Line rental to the home saver plan and your annual givings to the devil will be around $220 a year.

I use Internode's Nodephone all the time from home. All the house extensions run via the modem for outgoing calls and only use the POTS line (telstra) for 13 and 1800 numbers via the modem dial plan and for non VOIP incoming calls on the Telstra home budget plan all looped through the modem.

Never have any problems with VOIP outgoing as the whole system runs on a UPS for mains backup for the first hour.

i just got set up with mytel but dont like there service can never get hold of anyone for help

all but 1 phone in the house are on voip no UPS hence one phone still on the land line.

how much money do you think companys like telstra going to lose for no offering the service.

I do not think Telstra will ever offer it to the "Mum & dad" users as they would loose all the STD fees they collect.  I can ring anywhere in Aust for as long as I like for one small fee.  I also talk to other nodephone users at no cost and some times this adds up to hours when helping with computer training on line.

There are a lot of VOIP suppliers all with different costs and some much better than others 

I have been working with a number of versions of VOIP over the years and it is still evolving for general use but its getting easier and more reliable all the time.

My sister in sydney just got a broadband phone offered free with her braodband install. I think may be optus. it cut out every 10 mins. terrible. it is free i guess...

friends recently got burnt with it.
the offering in the paper has a low data cap & expensive excess per MB rate.

VoIP = two-way streaming data.

two teen-agers' music downloads + long phone calls = OUCH!!!

Argghh yes but the DATA that costs money... Hours of talk will add up to a lot of downloads so people with unwittingly low download limits like 300-500meg will find   it gets expensive quickly!

at least 2 gigabytes should be the definate minimum to be classed as broadband...

256kb is even useless if ya cant "Stretch" your arms for more than 60mins.

Once upon a time, "Broadband" was rigidly defined as a data stream greater than 2MB/S.  But that was before the media & marketing people got involved & mangled it into a marketing term instead of technical one. 

Can live with a bottom-end plan of low monthly volume being available to those who want it.  Know a few people who have them & have no trouble staying under their cap. Mostly older folks who do a small amount of email & browsing per month, update their virus definitions religiously once a year whether they need it or not. And never download updates to OS or other programs... (it ain't broken, don't play with it.) 

It's the adverts which bundle those low volume plans with high volume applications like VoIP which are irresponsible, borderline criminal in my view.

What little ye know.. You are only locked to the provider BigPond, not the plan. Customers can change plan once per bill cycle. There is nothing stopping them from going to a higher plan (or from higher to lower).

What happens when there budget is "up to $39.95"...they dont use everything on the net while they know how to do more than grannies.

I have been with Internode for a few years & noticed that they are installing towers for wireless internet down the length of Yourke Peninsula. Same as currently near Murray Bridge, Tailem bend and Coorong area. They must have a few more local councils on contract.
