Response of Bombers
« on: December 19, 2007, 01:45:34 PM »
Is it really necesary to respond the bombers to everything?? WOuldnt if be more cost effective to wait for a confirmation of a fire before response?

Is it effective to respond P1 to every fire alarm ? Yes, because if it is a going fire then you want a quick response with as many resources as required to extinguish.

From an outsider, same logic would apply to a fire near houses. If it is a going fire, hit it quick with as many resources as possible.

...as stated, opinion not from an active or trained fire fighter...so let me know if I am wrong....nicely,,,

Not really comparable. There are fire appliances already responding. Its not like you are sending nothing. Bombers end up going to a lot of dust plumes too.

I know of a number of grassfires that could be going to this day if it wasnt for the bombers on auto response to rural incidents during FDS. (Smoke signtings, etc)..

The bombers have a response contract, they would be rather annoyed if they didn't get responded. The number of jobs they have beaten appliances to and stopped or slowed the fires is numerous, so keep em coming.

Down here in the South East when ever a fire is spotted by one of the fire towers and a Automatic Dispatch is implemented the bombers based at Mount Gambier Airport are always up in the air several minutes after being paged and en-route to the fire

Hence why half of our fire calls to small grass fires are stop calls cause the bombers & forestry crews always beat us and have the fire out before it gets worse

Thats why they are there, they are critical to stopping / slowing a fire before it gets uncontrolable, maybe some people should have a read of the wangary fires inquest it might change there tune.

Bit different to responding two bombers to a small grass fire in the median strip of a freeway when the FDI is only high though.

I remember a job where I took the Fire Phone call and looked out my back window when the caller said where it was.
Upgraded to Second Alarm before hanging up - large smoke plume and growing.

Bolted to the station took the 34 and crew. On arrival first bomber was overhead did first drop and knocked the stuffing out of the head. Gave us a great head start and allowed us to begin chasing down the remaining flanks.

If I arrived and called for bombers the job could have been much much larger.......

Auto Dispatch is great!

That can be compared with responding a rescue appliance to an MVA with no spillage and no injuries, the caller may have it wrong.
There are houses either side of much of the freeway at Bridgewater, so had the fire actually been on the side of the freeway, rather than the median strip, there could have been houses under immediate threat.

I agree with what you're saying about it being a big cost for a lot of false alarms, but in my opinion, it's a worthwhile cost.
