Hundreds of workers evacuated at Port Lincoln

HUNDREDS of workers were evacuated after a major gas leak in Port Lincoln's industrial precinct last night.

The leak came from a large LPG tank situated at Plastic Fabrications on Pine Freezers Rd.

Workers at the factory heard and smelt gas leaking from the tanker about 6.45pm and reported it to emergency services.

As a result, a 1km exclusion was set up surrounding the 8000-litre tank. Residents in the area were also evacuated from their homes.

Cordons were been set up from Pine Freezers Rd to Proper Bay Rd and Windsor Rd.

ETSA cut power within the exclusion zone and four Metropolitan Fire Service crews, and Country Fire Service volunteers attended.

Gas contractors from Adelaide drove to Port Lincoln and isolated the leak about 4.30am by using pumping nitrogen into the pipes of the tank.

Firefighters dumped water on the tank to keep it cool.
