Media Release : An early fire danger warning for Thursday

CFS Media Release

The SA Country Fire Service (CFS) is advising the community that
Thursday 30 August is expected to be a day of increased fire danger
for many parts of the state.

CFS Deputy State Coordinator, Malim Watts, said that this Thursday is
expected to be a high-risk day with the Bureau of Meteorology
forecasting warm temperatures and strong winds.

"It is possible that there will be a number of fire ban districts
subject to a total fire ban on Thursday particularly where there is
scrub or forested areas across the State.

"Fire ban advice for Thursday will be confirmed late tomorrow afternoon.

"On a day like Thursday there is potential for burn-offs to spread out
of control and escalate into larger scale bushfires.

"While CFS encourages property owners to reduce the vegetation load
around their homes, we're simply asking people to wait until after
Thursday before lighting any burn-offs," he said.

"Fires can also rekindle days or even weeks after burn-offs have
occurred so it's important to continue monitoring the burnt area.

"Yesterday, South Australia experienced winds and warm weather and
several fires began on the Eyre Peninsula from burn-offs rekindling.

"The forecast for Thursday will be similar to what we experienced
yesterday," Malim said.

"People need to ensure they are bushfire ready and revisit their
bushfire preparation work they conducted around their properties this
time last year.

For more information on burning-off, or how to prepare for the fire
danger season, visit www.cfs.org.au or contact your local council Fire
Prevention Officer, CFS Regional Office or local fire brigade.

Media Release : A day of severe weather and increased fire danger

Media Release

The Country Fire Service (CFS) and State Emergency Service (SES) are advising South Australians that damaging winds are predicted for tomorrow, which have the potential to increase the risk of damage to property and create higher than normal fire danger for many parts of the State.

CFS Deputy State Coordinator, Malim Watts said that conditions predicted for tomorrow are similar to those experienced in 2002 when high winds combined with dry conditions saw several fires across the State in forested areas.

‘Burn offs undertaken over the past few days and weeks should be inspected and preparations made to prevent any potential for a fire to escape.

‘Any person considering undertaking any burn off operation today or tomorrow should wait until at least Friday before lighting up,’ Mailim said.

The CFS encourages all South Australians to be Bushfire Ready and consider the following action:

- Clean out gutters and trim overhanging branches

- Ensure there is a clear area surrounding your home

i.e. remove dead branches, leaves, undergrowth, mulch piles and other flammable materials

- Ensure sprinkler systems, hoses and petrol-driven water pumps are in working order.

Acting Chief Officer for the SES, Stuart Macleod, said the prediction of winds gusting in some areas up to 120 kilometres per hour (kph) are likely to cause damage to property and the SES is asking the public to take precautions.

The SES encourages residents and businesses to consider the following action:

- Ensure your roofing is well maintained and roof tiles secure

- Check overhanging branches

- Secure loose items in your yard, such as outdoor furniture etc.

- Ensure that animals have shelter

To contact the SES for emergency storm assistance call 132 500.

To contact the CFS for information on fire restrictions, or how to prepare for the Fire Danger Season, visit the CFS website www.cfs.org.au or contact your local council Fire Prevention Officer, local CFS brigade, CFS Regional Office or call the CFS Bushfire Hotline on 1300 362 361.
