Now I know this isn't a pager message, it was taken from the 'AdelaideNow' site, but I didn't want to start a new thread just for this;

"Queensland Fire and Rescue Service director of rural operations Tony Adcock said about 500 firefighters, 80 per cent of whom were volunteers, were currently battling 50 fires across the state.
"We're getting to the point where firefighters are getting very tired and have used up their available time," he said."

Surely he's got the figures wrong, thats only 10 firies per fire, we send more to a car fire half the time :?

David....no that would be pretty right. They (in Qld) do things a little different to us (no surprise there i guess) so a lot of the time they let stuff burn and just monitor it with a 14 equiv....and call for help when it looks bad. Some of the reasoning behind that is geographical (similar to NSW in that regards for those that went there), some of it is institutionalised thinking about how to fight fires in their state.

A ratio of 20% career staff overall is pretty high in the bigger scheme of things. But again....knowing how Qld run, not surprising.

Maybe we wouldn't have some of our fuel loads if we did the same here.
Fire-stick farming, natural lightning pattern, & all that.

Interesting thing which was pointedly -not- mentioned in the TV show on
California fires the other night.  North-Western Mexico has exactly the same
weather, topography & indigenous plants as Calif, but doesn't get "mega-fires".

Why not ??
Mexico lets scrub fires burn, only defending human assets.
Consequently, they have no-where near the fuel loads.  Therefore, their fires
are a fraction of the intensity and suppression costs of the ones on the
northern side of an imaginary line on a map...

Maybe we shouldn't extinguish anything when the FDI is less than 25 or 30
unless a much higher FDI is predicted for the following day...
Food for thought.

cheers
