If SAAS as the agency overseeing these things (on Healths behalf) is happy with single operator strecher transfer cases, then its all a moot point Rubbs. Sadly, operators will always scew up, I've seen similar things happen with SAAS crews in the bay at the RAH several times (and worse).

Remembering that AIMS is the Health SA wide system for reporting clinical and systemic issues, feel free to make your observations known to them officially (yes it can be anonymous) - but if you don't, you're just adding to the issue - your choice  :-)

The issue for almost the entire victor harbour group is that the people live in teh town and the fire stations are out of the town. There has been intense recruitment advertising within victor for the last few years now. Perhaps putting a CFS station in or on the edge of the town would be a good move ending up with a similar system to say Woomera.

without getting into the whole slanging match....and I'm certainly not defending nurses...heaven forbid, but...

In terms of medications, paramedics, AOs, ICP and yes, even ECPs are in exactly the same boat as Nurses regards medications. They (the green types) are operating under a Medication Standing Order, underwritten by a Medical Officer (the big H in the case of SAAS). They do not have autonomous prescribing authority, they respond within a set of parameters (call them, oh I dont know - Clinical Guidelines or Protocols, depending on your flavour). Nurses; Enrolled, Registered and even the super Practitioner types, do exactly the same - it's just a more visible presence of the MO. Visit the RAH in emerg and see what the senior nurses there are giving....without referring directly to a MO, just like we do.

For my part....I just see it as a waste for an ambulance service to train and equip an ICP and then lose them again to learn nursie stuff, and have them cost the system double the price of a RN when they are working. Sure they are sometimes available to respond to Cat A's or sometimes Bs....but if they are being utilised efficiently, they will be up to their armpits in Grandpas catheter and drainage bag. Why would you pass that up for a run of the mill SOB?

If SAAS want to organise the system, great...dont care, but seriously, why dont we control the world and include dispatch and coordination for RDNS, and the whole ancillary home help network in the equation? The one stop home help shop....include key cutting and haberdashery and we will corner the market  :lol:

At some stage....maybe we should concentrate on being the best Ambulance Service....goodness knows theres a few places to work on there first.

If you want to get seriously serious, and make real inputs into out of hospital outcomes, ....train them as Physician's Assistants but leave the nurse stuff to the nurses

Seriously, the stuff they do could be done by a Nurse who costs half the price (to pay and train)....not a criticism of the people, just a bit of a dabble in areas other than ours perhaps. But since we are all of the one family now, I guess Grandpa Health loves us for it...

The current system sort of works ok. My only issue is the waste of a crews time waiting in Emerg waiting for a pt to come down. Tying up an emerg truck for 30-40 mins waiting for admin is ridiculous. While space is at a premium we all know, a holding area needs to be found so that when pts are booked, they can be there waiting when we arrive. We have suggested previously that if the pt doesnt arrive in 20 mins from our arrival, we will clear and return and the pt can be re-booked. Now that we are all part of the one happy (health) family, then it cant be too hard to find a solution for all

and that is the best spin you will ever see on a forum..lol....obviously your State Manager has schooled you well, he was a grand master of the stuff  :lol:

one day things will be smarter and you'll all be in the same fricken Group

I would not consider working with the EMT Ambulance organisation. The thread relating to their company explains my reasons why.

lol....obviously not in you're end of the world alloutthere.... but in some Regions, specifically Central, its gone out and people have received letters asking them to provide reasons why they shouldnt be booted and to sign contracts ensuring they will meet the requirement.

I'm very happy to have a system that guarantees patient outcomes,bring it on I say - read my comments earlier again.....this latest requirement is not about that - its about MAKING people be on a roster and arses on seats. It has everythign to do with reporting crew gaps to SA Health and the state of the volunteer workforce

Darius, you're absolutely correct in your interpretation, in fact it will probably mean both of those things.......my (strong) objection is with the article that tries to use US and OUR work to feather THEIR nest. Go back and read the article again, it's a huge heartstring tug on the "poor volunteers" theme.

allouthere....thats fine, in fact seeing as your station only does that amount it is far easier for you to sit at home and wile away the standby hours and very occasionally get a job, than for some.

For those of us that travel away from where we live to do a shift, and therefore have to stay on station all shift, or whose stations do 600+ jobs a year, meaning that you get multiple jobs (usually to town) on many shifts, it's not so hard to "balance" your life as you put it.

For me a 12 hr shift means I am not at work, nor at home for 14 hours. I cant do any of my study nor any work associated with my employment, because we get multiple jobs, or spend out time at a sleepy little paid station covering their single crew's absence. I've done weekly (and more frequent) shifts for over 6 years now.....I just don't like the inference that I HAVE to or my contribution to a community I dont live in isnt wanted.

i actually have no problem with the ATOs ruling......last time I looked we were an Emergency Service...not a charity. I actually object to the CFSVA projecting me as a needy charity case and playing the poor hard done by volunteer all the time

If you read the letter correctly it says that a CFS Career Staff Member will be conducting the validation.

I think if you read your letter correctly....that is for the duration of the trial. Once the trial has concluded,
"... any CFS Officer who is a current BA operator or an approved BA Trainer Assessor will be endorsed to validate the procedure

And while we're on it....seems like the process for the end of the trial is agreed and in place......is the trial a Dorothy Dixer and a forgone conclusion?

One of the main reasons in CFS having a reaccreditation course at all was to get people back in centrally, to ensure that little Brigade-isms didnt creep into peoples practices. Now, there wont be one standard anymore....just a whole bunch of local interpretations of the FGP (like that doesnt happen already..lol)

For those people who are supposedly attacking the Government about training funding......where are u on this? Just cos NZ did it (who have no money either!!), doesnt make it a right and just process.

I'm sorry is that silence I hear the CFSVA or whatever they are this week, making waves in the media about a loss of training funding? Are the gang of 4  GOs(or 5 or 6 or however many there are) going to get in the media about it? Rainer....where are you and Mike Pearce on this?

Of course life is simpler if we as firefighters always stay in our little Brigades and never have to go out into the big world and be accountable to someone neutral for the way we operate....but please dont use that as a justification for a better system....
