SA Firefighter General / Research required

Hello
I'm a published fantasy author writing a fictional character who is a firefighter, and I'm having quite a deal of trouble finding what I need on the net. So I wondered if anyone in the forum might be generous enough to answer some questions about procedure etc so I can make my character and situation as believable as possible. He's 28 and lives in a rural area, but he's fighting a house fire the day he gets sucked through the portal into another world.
