SA Firefighter

Adelaide Fire is located within MFS Station 20, Wakefield Street Adelaide.

We use a combination of the traditional UBD and CFS Map book and a HEMA Navigator 6. It is similar to a TomTom or Navman GPS however you can switch between street navigation and topographical maps (like the maps in the CFS Map Book).
I have yet to utilise its full potential at incidents as I'm more of a traditional map book person but I can see its usefulness for those that have difficulty navigating.
One thing to be careful of is the reliability of the HEMA devices. Though we haven't experienced any problems with ours just yet, I have heard that they have a reputation of unreliability.

Edit: Also, no electronic device should ever replace traditional maps and navigation methods, if you end up with some sort of device, ensure that all relevant maps and/or books are still carried on your appliance!

Alex - I was under the impression that SACAD had been programmed to default if they had not gone mobile after a specified time delay? Is this the case or have I been wrongly informed? If this is the case how do a brigade get away with something like the above example?

Shift System

On successful completion of the Recruit Course, you will be posted to a shift and station subject to staffing requirements.  It is possible that you may be posted to Port Pirie or Mount Gambier.

Full-time Firefighters are employed on a shift system to provide for 24 hour cover on every day of the year.

In the Adelaide metropolitan area, each shift works two 10 hour DAY shifts (each from 0800hours to 1800hours), followed on the next two days by two 14 hour NIGHT shifts (from 1800hours to 0800hours the following morning). The Firefighter then has four days off before starting the cycle again.

In Port Pirie, each shift works 24 hours, commencing 0800 hours, followed by three (3) days off before starting the cycle again.

In Mount Gambier, the full-time crew work during the day, Monday to Friday an average of 40 hours per week.

Compressed air foam system.
An on-board air comresser is used to inject air into the foam/water mix. Gives a far "foamier" foam straight out the branch. Mix can be adjusted "wetter" or "drier" depending on the application. Can be used for covering fuel, oil, fuel/oil fires, etc, but also has many rural uses...

Might give it a whirl, you'll never know if you don't try!

What i'm asking is why said appliance needed to be taken to gumeracha for testing of a pump. There is no mechanic or testing facilities, etc. in gumeracha, so why there? Its a 25km drive well outside of the brigades area, let alone group. There is an identical appliance in gum station so if it wasnt the pump on the appliance itself that needed testing but something requiring a pump, i.e. some sort of installation, then why use an appliance from so far away????

As i have mentioned before, the 14 is far better suited to Birdwood than the QRV (my personal opinion is that a second heavy tanker would be more appropriate, however we will have to see how the 14 goes first, it may surprise us!!).

To my knowledge ex-Birdwood QRV is now a regional resource (much the same as Tanunda QRV) and although based from Mt Pleasant can be shifted anywhere at regions discretion...

I have no idea what went on at the state level, however there are some SFEC changes in the pipeline, as Birdwood and surrounding areas risks have increased substantially over the last 10 or so years.

The 14 is far better suited to our brigade than the QRV, the only reason we had a QRV is that its all the brigade could afford to build back in the day and the new QRV was replacing an existing asset of the same type.

I can't say until later in the week where our QRV is going but (in MY opinion or to my knowledge) it is neither a "need" nor a replacement for an older appliance...

Yes Birdwood are now proud owners of a 14 appliance (has done its fair share of work already!!). There is nothing wrong with the QRV (it will be missed!), its new home has been allocated (sorry alex) and will head there sometime next week.
