Country Fire Service / Re: Vol Mag volume 120 April 09

However, I am sure they have a number of other tasks, than to sit at a desk and publish the Vol. mag every three months?

If the bar needs to be raised, sure, then as paid staff they may need to put in a little more. But, my comment still stands re: members needing to put in a little, to get something back.

The few media liason people that there are, can't be everywhere, nor know everything that is going on around the place.

 :-)

I have to agree with Darren on this one.

Outside of work, I am the 'Editor-in-Chief' of the weekly newspaper put out of Woomera. In the grand scheme of things, this is tiny compared to the Vol. mag. We have only 3 staff. One who works on layout and design, one on research/writing, a third on post production and print - and myself. It is one fifth of the size of the Vol. mag, however does come out weekly.

As a community news paper, we also rely heavily on submissions from locals, toursits or defence/aerospace. So I can see how hard it would be to put together a magazine like the Volunteer, without substantial submissions from members to add to its content.

-It is very easy to sit back and judge, the real test is stepping forward and participating.  - (and no, don't write nasty letters to the Editor.. We don't like them)..

Happens every few years in that area.. Definately a threat to a number of properties on the hillsides and at the top of Woodend and other side of Young Street.  I'll have a look on monday when I get down.. :)

Not everyone lives in the CBD..  .. It was predicted to be nasty (I believe there was some hint of stong winds), however that prediction has since changed by the looks of it.

However, still plenty of action, good to see the guys from Station 80 getting to work! (Missed it by two days lads! See ya next week..)

Last. . .

On the photo of the bush top surronded by water, what depth of water are you talking about ?

Foot and a half..

The shots at the fence line would be 2 foot under water, further into the Pistol Club is around 4-5 feet at the deepest parts..

You know the guys are P/A do you Bill?

After personally speaking to the S.O the other week, I think you statement is a little blase..

Sure, like all Retained/Vol stations, everyone can have some difficulty during the day for crew. But to say things 'have not been good' is slightly over the top.

Fire Fighter Training / Training Hazmat Operators in non-hazmat brigades
« on: October 09, 2008, 11:02:02 PM »
There are already a few HAZMAT trained operators in the Mawson group.. I know of a couple in Happy Valley alone.. (I am one of them).

I'm lucky enough to be 90 mins away.. Don't fancy playing in teargas tonight, but, who knows what might happen..

But for now, its dinner time! ;)

ah there may be Hazmat operators tho ;)  They could respond with the nearest Hazmat Brigade, not sure about MFS hazmats tho.

& that there are.. ;)

Not to mention the reduced Hazmat responses, or responses that turn into Hazmats once onscene.

My shift is just starting our 14 hour night shift.. See what the evening holds..

Incident Operations / Re: house fire
« on: October 08, 2008, 10:04:13 PM »
Interesting topic....In my group, we have a rule, the primary brigade can respond 2 trucks, and the back up responds 1 unless told otherwise. Makes for a far more manageble incident. Stops alot of this sending everything business. Leaves something in the station for further calls.

As Matt and Darren have said, it does work extremely well.. Including the response of the 14's. Happy Valley and M/Vale 14's have been extremely handy in fighting some rather large fires in the past!..

You have a very valid point CFS_Firey.

Although out these parts, i'd rather wear my jocks in a Gas Suit.. (As shocking as that might be for the guys doing decon.. :p )

Gets nastily hot!

Most memorable case I attended was a Trauma job, much like what BM described.

Bike VS Car 4 km out of town. Bike was in excess of 120km/h when hitting the car doing a good 100km/h.

Bike had 2 on board. 1 with an open face helmet. (Rider and passenger located 200m down the road from the bike).

Some nasty injuries, some open fractures, spinal injuries, and some serious, serious skin graphs required.  (Resulted in retrieval funnily enough).

Normally the calls to the Hotel when you deal with inebriated persons are always quite amusing, whilst the most difficult at the same time.
