I was not discussing OHS policies in this forum.  Clinical Competence and OHS have common bonds, but are otherwise wide apart.

That might be your opinion med-boy...but the proof is usually in the pudding.....and those who are competent, professional and worth their salt don't generally feel the need to market that just to prove a point!

There's nothing wrong with what Pip is doing In getting the community on-side.  I thougt this was the whole concept of "community" - ensuring that everyone is aware of issues that have the potential to impact on their welfare!

I can also see your Side Alex - but would be so bold as to suggest that perhaps those who do make those types of phone calls are also the type who rarely leave the house to interact with their community.

Perhaps the whole concept of CFS managing globally from a metro centric base is a little outdated if it doesn't recognize the ability of locals in any community to promote the CFS and it's relevant safety messages at the local level taking into account local issues, resources and infrastructure!

And like most things that happen in this state - there will be a lengthy delay in having any kegislation to regulate it......and then when it does it will be rushed through and c0cked up anyway

For the ignorant among us- there is a headset communiction system in the car...not to mention the CCTV system for the back of the car....

Having been a public servant for more than 10 years it is easy to see why, in the last 4 or 5 years that volunteer based  government ESO's will have difficulty retaining staff.

As an employee on a reasonable wage, I tolerate the bull$hit, the politics  and borderline bullying type behaviour because it is my job.....but when you're there volunteering your time and all these barriers keep popping up....it's easy to see why retention is an issue....not to mention the effect that a lack of retention has a direct knock on effect to your recruiting when word gets around as to why no-one hangs around!

It's not that hard to be nice to your staff now is it? 

STATE Emergency Service workers could be paid in a set-up similar to the Army Reserve under a proposal floated yesterday designed to boost volunteer numbers.

Emergency response to recent wild weather, including Cyclone Yasi and flash flooding, was hindered by not enough volunteer workers turning out when called upon.

Townsville City Council's Community Safety chairman Cr Dale Last said the volunteer group should begin paying its people to ensure they were ready and able in our darkest hour of need.

Cr Last said Cyclone Yasi highlighted the fact the service needed more members.

"The problem we are experiencing is people are now time-poor and a lot of other organisations are in the same boat with people struggling to give up their time," he said.

He said payment would make the ailing service more attractive to join.

"It would provide some form of remuneration and provide incentive for people to join and we need more people, there's no question about that," he said.

SES local controller Joyce Scorey said she was happy with the service's response during the recent wild weather.

"Overall, we did very well I think the only issues with that was the public expectation that the SES can do anything and everything," she said.

"However we were a bit thin on the ground, which is normal for this time of year."

"We had teams ready together within hours of the cyclone crossing the coast."

Ms Scorey said while the prospect of being paid for their work would entice new members to the services, it wouldn't necessarily bring with it a higher level of recruit.

"I think it will have a detrimental effect," she said.

Cr Last, who is also the Local Disaster Management Group chairman , urged the State Government to get behind the call.

"It's been the subject of previous discussion, but I think in the wash-up of all the disasters Queensland has experienced this year, I think it's something that should be discussed," he said.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said he preferred the SES remained a volunteer organisation.

Any highly unionized workforce which is focussed on just one or two specialized workgroups will be inherently, much stronger.

It is for this same  reason the AEA doesn't represent non-public sector paramedical or ambulance staff. 

While yes- it makes life difficult for the paid CFS staff- I don't see how this workgroup would be any more or less represented in the UFU as it is the PSA given that they are such a small group.

simply closing a loophole so they can't get stung by one of the privates-  again...

you mean - there's forums in this World-Wide-Web that don't slag, sling mud, hang $hit on other users or generally just start bad rumours?

No- the reputation is there because all these kids who have gotten high scores at school to get into one of the more popular degree programs have no idea how to:

1)  keep their mouth shut at the appropriate times, and learn the line between assertion and aggression
2) admit that they are wrong or don't know
3) keep an open mind....the one method you are taught at uni isn't necessarily the only method
4) learn by working diligently and hard
5) understandthat they've just spent 3 years at uni learning all this stuff and only now are they going to start to learn how to be a paramedic.
6) understand that learning points 1,2+3 concurrently and interchangeably takes time.

absolutely - and neither should anyone fresh into any industry with no experience be stepping straight into those roles.

from a practical perspective it's dangerous, and from a business perspective it could cost you a lot of money in both lost productivity and lost clients because of it!

I can't think of one single industry off the top of my head where you can walk in and instantly walk the walk and talk the talk.....

Tradies spend 4 years as an apprentice for a reason!

Bugger off knackers....it's not about being nice- it's about being competent.

....And no....I don't care that you can tell me how knowledge of Sgarbossa's  criteria can make young better clinician if you sit there for 25 mins trying to diagnose the infarction while the patient quietly wanders toward the light at the end of the tunnel. 

the stigma isn't because they're uni trained.

the stigma is because they're all coming out with the attitude that they know everything already - and then they fall over at the first hurdle they get to in a job when you let them go.

granted- they're not all like it, but the majority will speak for the minority.

the best ones are those who've had a life outside of ambulance and have gone back to study and then come out on the road.  At least they have the ability to talk to someone without being aggressive, condescending or downright rude! (and that's not even the patients!)
