Being in a position to be able to use both CCBA & SCBA regularly, a CCBA will never be suitable for your standard fire service. Reasons - cost of individual units, unit testing time's, replacement component price and practicality of storage. Also after 2 hours in a CCBA the o2 you are breathing becomes that hot it becomes very unpleasant.

In relation to rope rescue .... mfs did have sapol deliver, but then went private, through a great adelaide hills based supplier and training provider ... unfortunately this has all lapsed and there are very few with any competencies left

That company has one of the most knowledgeable people in the world on everything ropes delivering training.

CnD, every brigade i have been in did not allow -18s to attend an MVA & if they were on the truck at the time of call, they wouldn't be allowed near the car until the severity of injuries was determined. For fires etc everyone is there with the same goal get the fire out safely. You tell me everyone involved / at a stabbing/fight is there for the same goal, it is a totally unsafe environment for a 15yo ie uncontrolled situation. As for actively pursuing them to step up, we also left it up to them to decide if they were ready. Nothing like putting undue pressure on a junior.

Straps, it was mentioned in one of the first couple of post's. They may have been there, they may have not, its not the point, it has nothing to do with the fact they are looking at an open stab wound, a person has just been STABBED,its the risk of serious harm to the first aiders. Are the police usually in attendance first?

but imagine the complaints when the guys cant get on the pilots emergency flying course because there all booked up or theres no funding. I can here the crying now. St John rostered healthcare professionals on every day of the Show, this varied from experienced Nursing Staff, Paramedic and IC Paramedic staff through to Medical Officers. They are a great clinical resource and a risk assessment is undertaken before each event as to determine the role / scope for cadets at events.

Who in there right mind would contemplate exposing a 15yo to a stabbing (as it were in this case). It is f*&king disgraceful that St John would allow this to happen. :evil:
If they are going to be used as a first aider at events this big, they should be confined to a treatment tent etc. under the strict supervision of a experienced, fully qualified adult (and by qualified i mean training above first aid and by adult i mean someone 25+).

In regards to competion mode i mean verbalising everything & i mean everything.

With the practicality thing, we did a skills event underground with a guy in a grader suffering an heart attack, our medic & myself decided to get him the hell out of there straight away to enable ease of CPR (if required) and for the purpose of the drill the ambos were waiting on the surface for him. It took us 3 min to get him out & 4 min to get him back to the fresh air base. We got docked points for not doing a secondary survey before moving him.

There were a heap of other things that in real life you wouldn't do, but in comps they want you to do.

Well it was a great weekend, alot learnt by all from OD. The winners were Northparks (NSW), 2nd Stawell (Vic), 3rd Rosebery (Tas), Fosterville, Oscar1, Bendigo, OD, CSA, Angas. 4-7 were separated by 2% and 1st & 2nd by only .5%.

Overall for a green comp team we did well, for us its just a mind set of remembering to get out of practicality mode & into comp mode.

Talk is we will start training for next year ASAP.

Well crew, i've flicked a little marble down the hill, lets see if it can have the impact of a wrecking ball by the time it gets to the bottom.

Maybe its time for the vol's to get behind Euan and tell him to speak freely, and if the minister tries to sack you, they sack us to. No Vol's, No Service. Not sure a minister would want a walk out of an entire service hanging over his head.

It wouldn't even require the whole CFS. I personally believe that just a walk out of R1 vols would have the required impact. Seeing thats were this originated. Some may say its holding the government to ransom doing it this way, but if thats what it takes to get the message through that we are not going to put up with it any longer, then so be it.

Just be careful with the use of external provider, not because of the quality of training but because CFS has a shocking record of recognising external training, even though it is done under the National Accredited Competencies. I am going through a battle to get 4-5 courses recognised at the moment.
