Um, no it doesn't...  There is no cost associated with sending messages.

The cost is per pager registered on the network - the services pay an annual fee for each pager whether it receives any messages or not.

This is why CFS had a push on completing pager audits not so long ago so that all "missing" pagers were deregistered, reducing the overall cost.

I would suggest that this statement in the Regulations suggests that you must be present at the meeting to vote.


11—Brigade elections
(10) Each member of the brigade attending the meeting at which the elections are held is entitled to vote at the elections.


In cases like this, the Regulations override the brigade constitution.

I'd check with your Region's VSO to clarify this well before the meeting, so everyone is clear and there can't be any allegations of bias due to withholding information...

It's been explained to me by someone in the know that they're an expanded list of what is on the CFS AIRS reports.

For situation found - the number relates to the incident type number on the AIRS code.

For action taken - the number relates to the numbers found in the "action taken at incident" on the second page (Block A3) of the AIRS report. In cases where the number is not on there (like 15), the first number relates to the categories - so 15 is in the extinguishment series.

I don't have a list, but it's a start to work it out...

I believe that there was a policy a few (possibly up to five) years ago that was put out to brigades that it is recommended that people under 18 do not attend vehicle accidents, but it is up to the brigade captain and can be implemented on a case-by-case basis.

Several brigades decided that it would be best to implement a blanket rule that no under 18s go to vehicle accidents...

Thats why a good response to fixed alarm is a must.

Who says there wasn't a good response to the fixed alarm?

I was listening to the scanner at the time and from the sounds of it they had two appliances on scene at the rear of the premises.  They may not have been in view of the caller who reported the flame, but it sounded like they were still on scene dealing with the situation.

Really shits me when people give other brigades a bad name by not getting their facts straight and casting aspersions on their response!

And no, I'm not from the brigade, I just know how pissed I'd be if the same thing was said about my brigade.

The response for an alarm is the same as the response for a first alarm structure fire...  Under SOP 2.1 Initial Rsource Resopnse Schedule, there is no outline for an Alarm response, all Alarms are treated as a structure until it is confirmed they are not...

It is becoming increasingly obvious that you haven't been to many incidents, especially "incidents of note" if you cannot see the valid reasons that have been presented in this thread for minimising the number of resources that are sent to a scene.

It is cowboys like you that give the service a bad name...

Realistically, for a standard house fire, 2 or 3 BA crews with an hour breathing time should be ample...

Agreed!  There is nothing worse than an incident scene that is cluttered with unrequired people and appliances.

I've seen vehicle accidents (single car) where there are five CFS appliances on scene.  Add that to two ambulances, two or three police cars and a towie...  The scene becomes cluttered and people are unable to work unimpeded.  This is particularly annoying when the path to the vehicle involved is blocked by several non-required appliances and people who need close access (extra ambulances, rescue appliances) aren't able to get close to the incident.  Not to mention the increased traffic congestion that is caused by this number of appliances.


Same thing that can be said for structure fires.  Everyone is tripping over everyone else's gear and there are 20 guys standing in a circle with their arms crossed chatting whilst the others are working.  There is no need for that level of clutter at an incident. This is particularly relevant with rural properties with difficult access.

By all means respond all the resources NECESSARY to effectively and efficiently deal with an incident, but sending people for sightseeing is unnecessary.  It can impede operations and unnecessarily put all crews at risk.

Sounds like Croatia is copping it as well...

Private TV RTL said all five dead were members of the local volunteer firefighting brigade and that they were in their 20s.

Among the 14 injured, four are in a life-threatening condition, said a doctor on duty in the clinic in Zadar, a city on the coast across from Kornat where most of the injured are being treated. He spoke on customary condition of anonymity.

Prime Minister Ivo Sanader was heading to Zadar to visit those injured overnight, the government said in a statement.

The fire was still raging on the island, which has only hundreds of residents.

Croatia has battled a record number of fires this summer, but mostly only in forests.

Before Thursday's incident at Kornat, a firefighter who died on Wednesday while putting down the fire on another island was the only casualty of those fires.

You are obviously removed from all reality of situations.

How about the pressure that Volunteer Ambulance Officers put on Volunteer Rescuers (be it CFS or SES) that they need the patient out of the vehicle 10 minutes ago and can't they go any quicker?  Then tell them stop and change their minds on how they want the patient extricated five times in ten minutes?

It sounds like you had a specific incident that needs to be sorted out in the correct manner - through your chain of command.  Whinging on this forum will not help the situation.

It is unfair that you tarnish every volunteer with your negative experience at one incident.  Get some perspective!

1)  The RCR directory goes by suburb, so the response was correct according to that.

2)  The correct procedure for changing the database is for your group to sit down with the other group in question, agree that it needs to change and then submit the paperwork to region.  It was not an MFS error, it was an error in the data provided to them.  Whinging on here won't fix it - it needs to go through the correct chain.

According to the Road Crash Rescue Directory - if the address states McLaren Vale, the correct response is McLaren Vale for Fire and Aldinga Beach for rescue...
