Darren im not winging about being deployed i will not get the opportunity due to work i am a little frustrated at the seemingly lack of support that the CFS has sent in comparison to the devastation that has been inflicted by these fires.

Granted i do not have all the facts and if some one is able to give me these i will be more than happy to change my stance.

I am not all seeing it is just my opinion, as for mac wanting to get over there and help its pretty natural for any emergency staff volunteer or paid to want to help out their brothers in arms in there time of need, even if its just to push logs over to free up the locals to hit the fronts, every one has there opinions just dont poke holes in people who are keen to help or next time those people may not be around when they are needed.

lol :-D yeah well i stand by my statement that we could afford to send some more i wont be able to help out unless they send people tomorrow as im busy from friday for a week so im not hungry for action but they need some help

Just spoke to my duty officer advised that if required there will be a second deployment wednesday from other groups

I agree however we do start to heat up again on saturday with 37 forecast so my thinking would be to send as many as we can for this week before we heat up again and cant send any, NSW has problems of there own at the moment so not sure if they are sending any?? any one know?

looks like they're only sending a couple of crews from each region i thought they might want more than that how many did they send over for KI?

Yes it was a news story however it made reference to volunteers as well as calls from locals for Euan Ferguson to step down I have no back story on this other than what ive read of the coronial report and what the friendly news people said.

(hence the reason i asked for any one closer to the top of the chain to confirm it or not)

however i still think that it would be a slap in the face if the CFS in general was sued because it still reflects that the local brigades were negligent in some way and that is what got my attention.

Hi all,

woke up to the news that we are now all going to get sued if mother nature decides  to have a bad day, can any one who's closer to the top confirm if this is accurate  and if so whats every ones thoughts??

my thought is that there wont be a volunteer fire brigade very long if this is allowed to go through its rather hard all ready to recruit vollies cant see adding you might get sued to the recruitment drive helping out any,

i think that this would be mightily unfair to the local brigades who wouldve no doubt been trying their hardest under the most trying conditions to protect as many assets as they could,

as for the local farmers and such who lost property its been drummed in our heads to be prepared YOURSELF for a bushfire as there will NOT be a truck at every house shed etc. and there is plenty of evidence that a well prepared farm, house, shed or even caravan can be saved very easily with a little planning.

over all perhaps they would like to see how the next one goes with only farm units.

agreed youd need fine print to stop people abusing it i suppose however might help those brigades that struggle for day crew and an alternative to the paid firey suggestion in the paper

i ve worked for woolies as a dept manager mostly and it depends what store your at some are fine others will try and fire you, on the black tuesday fires i was told that if i left i was gone i left any way and they didnt fire me so meh im at origin energy now and they seem very reasonable just have to provide a covering letter from oic unlimited leave as works busy period is in winter not summer

finger pointing is very destructive for sure, it will be alot harder for brigades to attract and retain members if they're going too cop a rap for trying too help. :-(
or next big fire send out those lawyers and inquirie people and tell em to put it out. :evil:

i reckon we should fill the court room with fireys, then lets see how courages they are at 2nd guessing split second decisions :evil:

Yeah you all raise extremely good points i would certainly have understood had i been leaving for every cat up tree, however we get approx. 30 calls a year and i would average maybe 1/2 of them most of which are car accidents at silly hours of the night/morn. but my position was at fairly large establishment and i did not get paid for any of incidents i attended during work hours. this plus i odnt know how well off you guys are for volunteers but we respond too many incidents with 3 crew members i dont think i've ever seen a group repsonse where we have had enuff crew for all the trucks. so its difficult but its probably inevitable that i'll have to cut down further on cfs calls in order to make aliving. thank you all for your very valid points. :-)

In regards to retaining young members. i am 19 and have been in cfs since i was 12 as a cadet and now have 3 years fire ground experience. in my position the hardest thing about being a member is keeping jobs! i have lost 2 jobs in two years for responding to calls both being strike teams to major fires. last year on black tuesday and then this year for KI it is extremely difficult to find supportive employers in the local community! :-(
