I think I've cleared this up now. I said its simply easier to distance yourself not spending a whole lot of time having hands on / usually constant voice contact with the casualty. I've said 3 times I participate in the role in all 3 capacities, you still see the same things. Perhaps an elementary reading/comprehension course is in order, because it seems there's a remarkable amount of people who read what they want to out of a passage and miss the point.

Actually, this is more correct than one might think. THe minister for Broadband and TElecommunications has already recognised that the footprint for Next G spans the same area, and the people who complain about reception are generally those who have 20 dollar phone plans with crappy hardware. You really do get what you pay for...

The delay is to assist "like for like" migration to the next G network for the outliers. This being said, i'd advise people to actually make the switch because if it isn't done by the 28th of April, your number will go in to quarantine and since section IV of the contract is being voided by lack of co operation you can  actually have a whole lot of other problems.

So incentives hey - tell us more, I would be interested in what they are considerng since the same problems that affect SAAS affect SAMFS retained, CFS & SES. $5.00 a job? sounds like a real deal :-D.

Chook, I'm in all 3... Mind you, I think most of the goriest stuff I've done has been with CFS and SES.. SES probably the worst. Was speaking from experience though, mentally its easier to distance one's self in orange or yellow because you don't have to develop too much of a rapport(yes, primary entry you do develop something of one.. before someone jumps on that too) so its easier not to think too much about whats going on.

The age thing is also because we get to administer some pretty interesting things. I mean, as is CFS and SES I've probably used just oxygen in those roles, SAAS we're (under consult in most cases) allowed to administer Midazolam ,Diazepam, Penthrane (the green whistle), salbutamol, Epinepherine (adrenaline) and several other cool bits and pieces. I guess its something of a responsibility thing; I'm not keen on having half hte people I know stick a needle in me, intermuscular or not... I'd  be even less pleased with someone in highschool standing over me with a syringe!

I'd make the assumption also they're hoping for a higher level of maturity, rather than people who still find themselves dying seeing someone naked etc.

Incentives for SAAS are looking like subsidised Study, or the opportunity to go beyond the usual Cert IV in Basic Emergency Care. These however seem like rumours, though this was directly from the horse's mouth.

YEp, 100% correct. In CFS/SES you can distance yourself somewhat from the blood and gore, SAAS, you're probably going to be wrist deep until someone more qualified gets there, even then you don't HAVE to hand over...

The minimum age stipulations is because you have to have a FULL c class license, or it makes training very difficult. I didn't come off my P's until the last week we had to complete our driving log (8 hours, at least 2 at night). It makes things difficult if you can't drive the ambulance, especially if you are the least qualified to deal with teh casualty

We're reimbursed for petrol if we're out of area, and for a meal. If you're within the catchment area there's a $5 payment per case attended during a shift. If you have to leave work as part of a second crew, you usually have to be within the catchment area to be viable to take out the second vehicle, and thereby recieve compensation to have left work. There's no point leaving if you're working in North Adelaide and need to get back to Goolwa for a cat 2!

Yes, there are issues crewing country stations, and there will continue to be seeing as people have less and less time to give to the community. There are incentives being discussed, but all up in the air as far as last time I heard anything.

See, zer is danger involved no? Was just a point of discussion I guess. Since its recruitment season it sort of beccame an open discussion on "members of the past who didn't stay that long..." and "where do we want our brigade to move on to in future"

but seriously, if someone has the skills, ability, commitment and enthusiasm to participate actively within the brigade, then regardless of there personal reasons for joining, it is beneficial to the briagde.

we had a couple come along to try and join so that they could complete community service for there workplace, for some accreditation then they were just gonna leave... needless to say that is the wrong reason.

This is sort of what I meant... A few of the examples sited in our discussions were something like the latter, and lacking in the aforementioned ability, skills and commitment,  even the enthusiasm (ie. Down to "I'm not going if .... isn't going" mentality. I guess they're the kind of people we're trying to steer well clear of. Having encountered quite a few of the kind with no enthusiasm who hang around anyway, trying to shape recruitment to somehow attract the "Right" kind of people...

Yes, you can work on people lacking skills, but people lacking dedication, who are there fundamentally for the wrong reason can't really be helped out that much, and after a point, do they not become a liability, especially if they make it clear that they are not happy in the position regularly...

Ladies and gentlemen,

A topic that has been under debate and scrutiny lately external to forum life is the question "Is there a wrong reason to get involved?"

While a lot of people pop up straight away and think yes, do you think past it to the point of "its an extra backside on a seat?" or do you find that people who have questionable motives display questionable dedication, or perhaps conditional?

This has been a matter of discussion, seeing as its a great season to be recruiting, but at the same time, discussing who make the 'right' kind of team members: the kind who don't make a scene, don't revel in conflict and will provide some degree of assistance and contribute to the improvement of the team itself.

Its provided a few interesting answers aloud, just thought it was a decent idea for discussion/debate.

CFS? Well, I actually didn't know it was run by vollies at first, but once a couple of friends let me in on what had obviously run over my head I couldnt get into the local brigade fast enough! hehe, was on a waiting list for about a year. What keeps me there? The satisfaction of knowing we're great at what we do, helping the community and the friends I have made.

SES? Well, I started with the same juvenile, inbred attitude that comes with 90% of people in the CFS sadly, with the "Them and Us". I wasn't very vocal over it, however, one of the local unit managers was a family friend, and pretty much dared me to come along and give it a go, I loved it, and am still there! Same reasons I'm still with CFS pretty much!

SAAS once again I didnt know one could volunteer for, and its been a hard slog. At the moment there's not a whole lot of good reasons I'm with my current team, aside from the fact that I'm still helping out the community.

In any case, the new paint job is interesting, its very UK, though i imagine if you were a casualty with any kind of nausea inducing illness or injury the brightness of it all might not help with the vomiting...

I've called twice from mobiles in relatively recent times and its always been "Police, Fire or Ambulance", then a further request for location (state, Suburb)
