So what do you carry with you? I carry a Leatherman multitool, a brigade issue Super SabreLite, a pair of Nitrile gloves for RCR, wildfire glove and structural gloves, and finally a flash hood. In my Wildfire PPC I have goggles and smokerag as well.
RCR gloves
Wildfire gloves
Flashhood
Nitrile gloves
Cfs handbook for notes
Smoke mask
goggles
Gloves always kept in pants pocket
A few of those little cards they give out at BFF1 and fire drills about what to do at a fire etc 10 steps whatever it is.
Smoke Mask
Little first aid kit in a bag, if Im away on my own and need a band-aid I got one.
Pocket knife
I have a little pack i take with me it has
Nirile gloves
Kevlar gloves
Those green rural gloves
Safety glasses
Goggles
Bandages/first aid stuff
Food pack
Pen/pad
UA torch
Smoke mask
Rescue Knife, brigade issued to RCR crew (pacific cutlery brand)
Sunscreen
Digital camera
Thank god i've got a small bag
On the topic of those knives don't buy them they are SHITE. The seatbelt cutter doesn't work, the glass hammer part is too blunt and only flattens of when you try to break a window (even as hard as you can still won't break a window), and the blade itself doesn't have a sharp point so it can't penetrate window seals etc.
gloves
nitrile gloves (x2 pairs)
dust mask
goggles
rescue knife; blade, glass hammer, seat belt cutter in one (eikorn sp?)
CPR face shield
notebook/pencil
matches
ear plugs
one of the old bandages they stopped making that has a pad built into it...
fair bit of crap really... useful though, and all of it has been used at one time or other
im surprised none of you guys carry matches?
Actually those rescue knives are great for fishing
You've been listening to eaun too much, "all you need is a box of matches and a rake hoe"

HAHAHAHAHA yeah... so you can start yourself a campfire while your standing in the rain
only have level 1
gloves in pants (pocket)
notpad pencil
Hazchem code
goggles
smokemask
hat
sunglasses (CFS issue)
need to get some
matches
sunscreen
RCR and rural gloves
note book
torch
lollies
-Safety glasses
-rigger gloves
-surgi gloves
-structural gloves
-short piece of rope
-flash hood
-personal disposable face mask ( for cpr)
-socks
and now an electronic tag for the new BA sets to log me on...
Got sick of lugging them all around so i keep them in a little back pack and grab what i think i will need when i get to the job.
Rural Gloves
Structure Gloves
Knee Pads (Yes i know a bit soft but hey i have bad knees)
Led torch
Flash hood
Several of those cfs issued quick reference things
What i need to put in there:
Note pad & pen
Goggles
Dust Mask
Short Piece of Rope
Socks
Cheap Digital Camera
Surgical Gloves
Matches
Think thats it....maybe i can fit in the kitchen sink :-D
surgial gloves, mmmm did you know that once gloves have been in contact with foam/water they should be replaced its been proven that foam will eat away slowly at the rubber that is in the gloves...
I have a few of the items mentioned above, but where do you guys and girls keep all of the stuff. How big are your pockets??
hmm...
CFS notepad (the one with numbered pages) and pen
Gloves - still waiting for some decent structural ones.
Duct tape
Pelican mini-light (helmet mounted)
Bandanna (much more stylish than the triangular bandage) ;)
Any nitrile/latex gloves are once use only... as soon as you put them on the oils from your skin start to degrade the material (nitrile is a lot more resistant though). I did carry some, but we put boxes on all the trucks - so just grab them when needed now.

I have both an Eickhorn Solingen PRT-1 and PRT-3. - Havent had any problems and they have come in handy on a number of occasions !
(Regular sharpening and maintenance is the key.. - The seatbelt blades can be replaced, mine cuts fine ;) )
Different brand though ours are pacific we got them on monday night and were doing road crash tarining and they were useless. Will have to talk to our group admin who got them and get him to return them for the brand you have?? Do you know the price? i believe the Pacifics were around $50.
For memory the Eickhorn knives are $90 - $100.....
very nice knives... not sure what model is what, but the red handled ones are ment to be best for road crash (blade shape differs)
The blade is great it's curved serrated and sharp but it's a bult tip if it was a pointy tip it would be much better.
FRESH Nitrile Gloves
Smoke Rag
Goggles
Pencil & Pad
Eikhorn Rescue Knife
Wildfire Gloves
Couple of Barley Sugars
Only have Level 1 PPE at this point, so flash hood and the like would be fairly pointless

If you scroll down, you will see the different editions of knifes.
I have the PRT-1 and 3. - They are both fantastic, and I have found all of their knifes to be of top quality.
(Not saying others aren't)
(The PRT-2 is meant to be able to cut class with the blade of the knife, hence why many rate them highly as rescue knifes.. My opinion differs when it comes to actually cutting through glass or laminate with them, but every one has their own opinion.)
There are suppliers of them in this state, not sure how it works being able to give details ? - but yes, I do know where you can get them, most fire equipment companies can source them.
I got both of mine for around the $110-$120 mark each, with pouches.
I never go anywhere without MR Green  in my PPC.

What PPC do you have? I must admit the old Nomex gear, crica 1999 isnt the best for carrying gear, but still: Level 1: Gloves in overtrouser pocket, goggles/smoke mask in left tunic pocket, small hat in right tunic pocket. (oops, yes I carry a hat too). Level 3 gear: Wildfire Gloves in left over trouser pocket, Multitool clipped to right overtrouser pocket, structure gloves in right tunic pocket, Nitriles in left tunic pocket, flashhood on boots so it always goes on first.
its easy mate;
dont forget you can stash soft stuff inside the top of your helmet (probly stuffs the safety of it, but oh well), and keep your knife in a sheath on your braces
over my 2.5 sets of gear i carry...
cream coloured wildfire gloves (hated the staining green ones)
clear impact glasses
tinted impact glasses
notepad/pen
dust mask
RCR nitrile gloves
BFF1 cards
a bit of rope
handkerchief
Medevac: Have you ever tried getting your knife out while wearing BA? Put it somewhere that it isn't fouled by straps or the like, and somewhere you can reach it with a single hand. You never know when youre going to need it. The upper left arm pocket on the PBI is a pretty good location and mine hovers between there and my left leg pocket.
all well and good if you have PBI there mate (and yes, i am a BA operator)
on the braces has never posed an issue for me yet, so lets just hope i dont need it while im in BA
Just for something different, my orange overalls are setup for land search and operations control:
Top left pocket:
orange field notebooks, ordinary notebook, pens, pencils, map romer.
Top right pocket:
latex gloves, fabric dust mask, ear plugs, GRN pager
Leg left pocket:
personal first aid kit in double plastic zip lock bags.
Leg right pocket:
leather debris gloves, woollen beanie, woollen fingerless gloves.
black bumbag (SES standard issued):
headlamp torch, baseball cap, spare thick socks, resucitation mask, latex gloves, fabric dust mask, ear plugs, multi-tool pocket knife, army spoon/can opener/bottle opener, matches, LED torch, spare batteries, spare bulb for headlamp, protractor, compass, pocket notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil sharpner, two water bottles, dust/smoke googles, bandana, white board marker, permanent marker, hexamine tablet, matches, candle, small emergency flaher light, sun screen and insect repellant.
extras:
If I am in a operations centre and have time to grab my gear bag before I leave home. Then I will have USB key/MP3/FM radio, laptop computer, large folder with plastic interleaves containing a mass of printed information, clip board and A4 ring binder pads.
Are you the SES encylcopedia or is that ammount of stuff common amongst the SES? :-o
I am just paranoid
Also, I can be up to a 30 minute walk from a SES vehicle on a Land Search. This happens when on patrol at Clipsal500 V8 race or Showgrounds.
So I want enough gear for myself to be comfortable in the bush and not inhibit the team if a problem occurs.

Well he was after all a DSE man in VIC first, then CFA RO in VIC before he came here for the top job :-D

im surprised none of you guys carry matches?
I issued all my brigade members with matches, in a coin bag so they dont get soggy
My trusty bucket hat :-D :-D
and a few extras
In PPE pockets:
Gloves (whatever you get with level 1 gear)
Dust mask
Small bag normally hanging on 4wd lever in ute:
Digital camera
Eye wash (I wear contact lenses)
Sunglasses
Torch
Cap
Note book, pen & pencil
Wallet
If likely to be a strike team/long job, add to bag:
ipaq with mapping
bluetooth gps receiver
ipod & transmitter
book (novel. haven't previously, but next strike team I will!)
map book for appropriate region, if required.
jumper
Always have a pocket knife on my belt anyway.
What about a box of matches and a rake hoe
Thats all Euan needs :-D
does anyone else use those P2 dust masks with the exhalation valves? Our brigade has them and i am never using them again. In order for the valve 2 work effectively you have to actually put your mouth around the valve. and those masks get very soggy. im back on the trusty bandanna
With all these personal items we carry, what do you carry them in? My Brigade is looking at some bum bag style bags for personal items like phones, medication, leatherman, dust mask, nitrile gloves etc. Can anyone recommend a nice size durable bag? I have seen one with a reflective stripe stitched to it but not sure of the brand.
Hey ElectricEliminator,
If you want particulate protection in fire situations then a form of P2 mask is recommended - bandanas etc offer absolutely no respiratory protection whatsoever. If fact have been as providing a false sense of security.
But you make a very valid point about the P2 mask - they need to be fitted correctly and changed frequently to be effective..
Cheers
