Semi-professional, they're retained.
roughly how much would a retainer make
Depends on how busy the brigade is, but i dont think you could live off of it
Its usually something along the lines of $x a month plus $x per incident plus $x if incidents go over x amount of time. I believe thats what other states do, dont know about SA.
SF70 from Gambier said it was about 10-12 grand?? a year at his station and thats the busiest in the state, so definatly not enough to live off.

thats pretty average, considering you have to pass a heap of tests again, and gambier do 500+ jobs a year. you also have to attend at least half of the calls for each month. not too good for that much time.
im sure ath can clarify, but;
all retainees get a $350 (i believe) retainer per month, plus you get paid by the hour the same pay rate as a fulltime FF, every call you attend, you get 3 hrs pay regardless of if you make the truck (you just have to be at the station within allocated time period.. ten minutes i think) and get paid more depending on how many hours your out there...
there is no extra pay as far s im aware for prolonged incidents...
im not sure whether SOs or SFs get more.....

Like you said ath can clarify but as i am aware
there is the retainer, which last time i looked at joining was about $230.
$16.20 for the first hour of the callouts (although i believe this has increased)and another rate based on 15 min intervals i think thereafter.
and SO & SFF do get paid more.
Not paid the same as fulltimers though.. Considerably less actually...

...Nice way to contradict yourself there son.
My comment about professionals was definitely tongue in cheek so theres no need to be touchy. I was a CFS member for nearly 20 years and have nothing but respect for what the vollies do. MFS retained firies are not in it for the money they do a lot of extra stuff for nothing including station duties and PR visits. The monthly is about $240 for a firie and hourly rate is $17.80 for all no matter what your rank. Minimum is an hour not 3 (I wish).
i thought SFF & SO's got more money...maybe a bigger retainer?
Yes Camo SFF and SO`s get a tad higher retainer.Same hourly.
see told you ath could fix it up...

The fire itself wasnt too big. It was just hot, blowing a gale, near a house and at a point was spotting about 250m!

different...like your spelling! kidding mate. :-D
hey i am the bad speller on this webestie
Wasn't desperate....!! Lincoln CFS just know if they need a crew with in 5 min that MFS are pretty quick to RES where other brigades are at least 10 - 15 min from being mobile.
Personally I'd like a second back up crew ASAP not 20 min away.

You need to remember that Rural brigades don't live 5 mins or less from their stations and aren't sitting waiting for the pagers to drop...they have lives and a living to earn...oh and by the way, the two nearest brigades are 15-20kms away...
Some rural brigade can take up to 20 mins to turn out to a call, why?? well they have lots of cattel/stock gates to open and close, the station is more than 15/20 kms away.....
It the difference between Region one and most other places in the state. We've got it fantastic here, yet people seem to forget that...
It's something that Urban brigades forget quite quickly...and the fact that we are all volunteers...sometimes we can't just drop everything and run...
