What is a good scanner to get to listed to GRN ??
I take it you will need a Trunk-Tracker, is this correct
Yes you will need a trunk tracker III capabable scanner. Currently there are a few I know of.
Pro 96 (import from the USA) nice handheld
Uniden BC 780xlt base station, Discontinued might still be able to get one if you hunt.
Uniden 246T currently import from the US but may be available in Australia soon. Seems to be a nice handheld.
I would think about waiting till we know for sure if the new uniden is being released here.
Have a look at http://users.chariot.net.au/~mattb/scan/scanner.htm for S.A. Scanner monitoring info.
mb :D
Does anyone know if any of these scanner's would be suitable to pick up the CFS Frequencies?

The Pro 31 and Pro 39 will not work on the SAGRN, best bet is to try and find a second hand UBC780 on Ebay or wait a month or so for a new model to be released from Uniden (UBCT8).

The PRO-96 Digital Trunking Handheld Scanner Looks Like A Nice Scanner, However The Australian Price Is A Little Steep.
PRO-96 Digital Trunking Handheld ScannerThis handheld scanner has an abundant memory capacity, able to store frequencies in 5500 memory channels. Plus, you can store up to 16,500 ID codes in one "working" 500 channel, 1500 ID code scanner with 11 "virtual" scanner pages of memory! This scanner follows APCO 25 digital and virtually all analog trunked systems. More and more cities are using these trunked systems, allowing city services to share the same set of scanner frequencies. Conversations on these systems start on one frequency, then shift to a different one with each transmission.
- APCO 25 digital trunking
- Includes the new systems using a 9600bps control channel
- Scanner is preprogrammed with the most often-requested systems
- Expanded frequency coverage

- Alpha display can show name of service
- Continuous Tone Controlled Selective Squelch (CTCSS)

i use a uniden UBC780XLT, and it works like a charm.
reception is excellent, reasonably easy to program.
there is one on ebay ATM:

Not the cheapest, but if you are keen enough they are worth having.
Take a look at this new scanner better buy than a 780 in my opinion.

no you need a trunking scanner eg. uniden ubc780, ubct8, or the digital 396/996 models or a private import like the radioshack pro95/96 etc. Read up on it here: http://users.chariot.net.au/~mattb/scan/scanner.htm

HAHAHAAHA! Some classic work there by the swearing filter....
Actually any ordinary scanner with 100 channels or more is capable of picking up the SAGRN although the one downfall is that you've gotta put up with the SAPOL digital encryption noise but something along the lines of a 72xlt is real good for the beginner
As for the pros well i've seen a UHF CB Radio/Scanner in one on ebay for around 300-450 dollars the bonus part is that all the buttons are on the microphone and its a remote console kinda like what our old 163 mhz VHF radios were

I was planning on buying one but need to get a good paid job to afford it :-D
That link is simply a UHF CB (and yes it can scan the CB channels, as can just about every other CB above the most basic ones). The uniden 72xlt does not do trunking (as I said).
But Darius if you look closer at the specifications of this it has extra recieve only channels which can be programmed to listen to the SAGRN  as that is what i use my UH013 UHF Radio/Scanner in one CB for :-)
Yeah rob you still have to cancel out SAPOL and un-modulated base transmissions... FILTERED ANNOYING.
I run a 246t, 780xlt, ubc8T, and a 245 with austrunk.
The Austrunk is the best of course also uses a ubc 60xlt dickies for $25, 245 for $150 so for around $200 you could setup Austrunk :)
Uniden UBC-780XLT is the best scanner for the SAGRN :-D
I agree :-D cause i've got one although im looking at getting a 396 or 996t when i have the right amount of funds
There is also a UBC-996 which is a Trunktracker IV
Is it still possible to get scanners that have the fieries on it. Im pretty sure you can, i know someone interested in purchasing one (with MFS on it) but don't know where? :-D
If you are willing to shell out close to $1000 just to buy a 396t digital scanner and get it programmed :-)
wait till the new model unidens come out...

Is there only a new portable release coming or also a replacement for the 996t as I am looking for a 996 soon.
OldOne.
im assuming both, but dont hold me to it. The portable in itself is great, particularly from what ive heard for its scanning speed.
you can get a uniden ubct-9 for a lot less than a thousand.
Can anyone on here program a scanner for me. It's a UBCT-8. It has been programmed before but now all it seems to do is get stuck and all we hear is white noise.

I'd rather give it to someone than fumble thru the instructions on SA Scan (great site tho)!
Contact Matt Bonser he might be able to send a file to you.
