Cave Rescue

A question for Bill. Are you guys at Naracoorte accreditted for cave rescue? Who conducted the training for it? Are there aby other emergency services/units that are trained?

They dont need accreditation as they are already CAVEMEN!

The Naracoorte brigade has members who are trained in rope rescue,a cave rescue team is guided by a member of the parks team the rescue technically comes under the control of parks. So no we are not accredited in cave rescue on rope rescue..

There are SES units around the place classed as " Underground Rescue "... - Are there any near you Bill ?

The SES Units down this way do cliff rescues and other vertical rescue situations not underground rescues although i think that SAPOL might do underwater rescues down here im not sure :|

as far as I know no there are no SES underground units down this way but parks do have a good team who know what to do...May be cfs will have to look at expanding the rescue course so as it covers cave and trench rescue...

Wouldn't cave rescue have to be a different course, not just an expanded RR course?

Yes I suppose it would but apart from SES/mfs who else does cave or trench rescue? so should there be such a course???

How does 'cave rescue' differ from vertical and confined space rescue?

I don't think the CFS runs rope rescue courses anyway - they are run by other trainers like Fire and rescue Australia...

Technically - cave resuce is classified as a confioned space rescue. IN SA - SAPOL STAR and SES (Noarlunga and Whyalla) have trained, accredited and equiped teams for this. I believe there are also limited trained persons within MFS.

As we all know thought, there are many different style of caves - open, sink holes, verticle, horizontel and then those filled with H2O.

Guss in first instance a verticle team from SES, SAPOL or CFS could begin, however if in a hazardous environment or confined then a specialist team would be required.

Burnside CFS have been trained by a private company in confined space rescue and atmospheric monitoring and have a large array of specialised equipment on both the hazmat appliance and pumper including standard Hazmat, RCR, B.A equipment as well as atmospheric monitoring equipment, specialist confined space B.A gear and other lowering/lifting gear and even just purchased an electric PPV for venting confined spaces.
