Grass fire

Gday,

This is not so much a hypothetical as it was real.

A few year back their was a grass fire on the outskirts of Mt Gambier.

I can remember the details exactly but i believe the wind was from the south and it burnt 50Ha or something.

Here is some details.

Fire started on side of road burning in a northerly direction.  1 House on the Western side of the fire approx. 100m from the fire line and the small Compton community approx. 1km to the east and then the City of Mt Gambier approx. 2.5km to the east.

Now....Wind changes around Mt Gambier usually come from the west.

So with this info would you attack the western fireline or the eastern fireline as the fire arriving appliance?

Attack the flank closest to assets and pinch it out to reduce the head :wink:

Bomber would put it out before you got there cam.....

If its a grass fire Forestry SA,GTFP,CFS would be at your disposal....  have the new fire kings attack the fire directly whilst CFS & GTFP crews work along the flanks until its knocked down and blacked out

This is true along with forestry sa, gtfp & possibly the MFS if they were called.

I can remember seeing that same grass fire on Win News and it turns out that Forestry SA & GTFP crews were called to assist CFS and the bomber dropped a load of water along the flank of this fire

I know the Bombers are gods gift to firefighting... But there is no garuntee that they will ever be where you are...

We gotta beg and scream to get one down here. Had a fire earlier in the year that was just 1.2km out of the bomber zone and the DGO ahd to go through the full chain to get it mobile.

thats the way it works though MUNDCFS.

auto dispatch in the zone... and the whole shamozzle of requeasts via RDOs outside....

in theory it doesnt take too long if its necessary though.

what? like following correct procedure? sounds liek things worked perfectlty to me...

fire was outside the zone so no initial dispatch, incident controller followed chain of command to request them, request was forwarded and succesful?

Point I was making is that sometimes the bombers can take 45 minutes to respond, by which time even though it was outside the zone by 1.2 kms could have devastating effects by the time they got there :roll:

SAFirey - perhaps you could contact region and speak to someone, ask them about the types of bomber response (auto and 45min, etc) and how they go about organising them, times for them to get there and the sorts of things region has to consider before authorising them.

Also begs the question of whether this was before/during the fire danger season would also have an impact :-D
