training in things you're brigade is not certified in

hey,

i've heard that you're allowed to train a certain number of people in things like RCR, hazmat even if you're brigade is not an RCR or hazmat brigade, just so members can assist. Through various arrivals and departures we have 2 members trained in RCR and 1 in hazmat. I have heard the number for RCR is 4 people allowed to have trained. can anyone confirm or deny this and do many brigades do it?

Generally SFEC's dictate training requirements for Brigades. Not RCR Brigade - no RCR training. However i know some Brigades who have people trained in various things even though their Brigade is not prescribed in them. Not what you know but who you know

Untill you get all members of a specialist brigade that want to be trained, trained, there is no reason to train members of other brigades in the off chance they might use the skill.

Its no use training people just because they 'want' the skill, when you have people who 'need' the skill and don't have it.

I know people how have been trained and then moved brigade and no longer have the equipment to use the skill.

Before you can do that you have to get your group to write to the region and they will say yes or no... We have a rural captain who turns out with us and we had to go through this process before he could do the rcr course....

its just that im not in an RCR brigade and RCR really interests me. I had heard this rumour and thought that if it was true, I would consider doing the course. but it seems thats out of the question now  oh well, back to respond to wildfire

you're probie_boy aren't you? your brigade goes to the odd RCR and assists Stirling.  Talk to your captain, if there's a spare place in a course you might get lucky.

Now I am a bit confused (nothing unusual some say). Like SES, some courses are cancelled due to lack of attendees. Yet someone interested cannot join the course because the Brigade will never attend that type of incident

I will never attend a USAR or Basic Rescue incident has a rescue person, but I have completed some of the courses recently. The knowledge helps me understand what others are doing when I am in Ops or doing PR.

Whenever I applied for the course, the criteria was 'members from active responding Units have first training priority'. If spare spaces on the course & I met the course requirements, then I could attend.

Its frankly stupid. They run courses with empty spaces, or cancel them due to lack of interest, but they won't put people on courses because their brigade has the 'minimum' trained.

I for one would like to see the min/max amount of members who are trained in RCR/CABA/HAZ/etc removed if members are willing and able to give up there time to do the course then so be it. By letting  members do the course and yearly upskills are we not making sure that we have members who are trained and who will remain in a service that gives them the chance to use the skills that they have learned? What harm does it cause if we have all members with the best skills to do the job rather than have 10 members who are the one's that do it all the time...If we allow members to do the training don't you think it might just might stop the old and young thing?
