Article in Messenger press re outer southern Adelaide
« on: September 08, 2006, 02:59:00 PM »
This weeks 'Southern Times' Messenger Press newspaper gives a front page article on Onkaparinga Council detailing to SAFECOM a study by Planning SA that fire response times are inadequate in their area.

I personally smell a rat when Councillor Bill Jamieson who is detailed in the article, is the President of the United Fire Fighting Union (SA).

Leigh Miller from CFS, Roy Thompson from MFS and Dermot Barry from SAFECOM was interviewed for the article.

Bottom line is that SAFECOM stated a current review of the "...provision of fire and emergency services..." throughout SA will "..be completed by the middle of next year with three possible outcomes:

* Increasing resources to volunteer CFS crews in the area, including staffing stations during the day;
* Identifying a real need for another 24-hour MFS station in the south; or
* No action if investigations found things were running smoothly as they were..."

I will scan and post the actual article later.
Andrew Macmichael
lives at Pt Noarlunga South.

My personal opinion only.

Not anymore, haven't seen him on the trucks for a couple of years now, but he has always been a bit anti CFS. He was always ok on the job but has been a regular in the local paper having a go at our response times etc.

We had a look at that map last week, it is absolute bollocks.

According to the map brigades like Happy Valley, Seaford, Aldinga Beach and Sellicks can't get out the door and to a job out the front of their station within 8 minutes of the pager going off. This allows 3 minutes to get to the station and 5 minutes travel time at normal road conditions.

This is based on GIS spatial data and takes into account hills and roads etc, it has nothing to do with historical data of any kind. There is even areas not far from the Christie Downs MFS station that the map shows MFS can't get to in 8 minutes.

The whole map makes very little sense and the U.F.U. seem to have just jumped on it before anyone can point out that it is a crock of scheiße.

Apparently the maps were done by calculating normal road speed to the areas from relevant stations to judge response times.3 mins to get to stations for CFS crews and 5 mins for response to the job while MFS was 8 mins from station

Agree.....MFS cant beat the HV boys :-D

The review was done by Planning SA I believe but Jamo's info is highly bogus and the map is seriously deluded
