The SES operation orders were issued last night and this included the roster of personnel. So between 16 and 19 SES volunteers will be on the race track surrounds from Thurs 23rd to Sun 26th March.

If you are going to the race, come and visit our SES Field Command centre. Three SES rescue vehicles and two SES bicycles will be on site each day.

We will be south of the Competitor Medical Centre, which is near gate 2, Angus St entrance.

Is anyone else going to the V8 race ?

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the ability to control it.

On the assumption that means you are part of the on-track fire/accident crew

For my curiosity:
I know that race flag marshals need to attend a certain amount of races beforew CAMS will allow them on track. SO.....

What is it like to be part of the fire crash crew at a car race ?
What extra training do you need to do ?
Are you in constant tension, or is it a relax until an incident happens ?
How much extra water would you drink being in the fire suit all day ?

Extra training depends on weather you do it week in week out with the SA Motorsport Fire and Rescue Organisation, WFW..  Like some of us do.. Or whether you are a first timer.. Have fire background.. etc etc..

You can tell those guys/gurls from the different fire suits, they say  - MOTORSPORT FIRE AND RESCUE on the back...

There are clipsal training and fire extinguisher days which is compolsury for first timers on the V8 Track, there is inductions and saftey briefs each morning before each race day also...

And you are always under the direction of the Chief point/sector steward depending on where you are located.. (you can't just run out on the track willy-nilly...)  - Just cause a car hits the wall, doesn't mean the one doing 200kmp/h behind it is going to stop cause you look like santa !

This is my fifth year as part of the Clipsal fire and rescue crew, and fifth year as a SA Motorsport Fire and Rescue member also... Attending numerous and various race meets throughout the year .. (including Sprintcars, drags, track days, mallala events.. list goes on) !  Its all good fun !

In answer to the quesitons..
For my curiosity:
I know that race flag marshals need to attend a certain amount of races beforew CAMS will allow them on track...    - Answer - I believe there is like a ... probationary period as a learner or beginner to Flag Marshalling... But if they are new they will be under supervision .. Just like E4 fire and rescue members withought there full (un-supervised) license..

It is taken in turns during the day to 'un-suit' or sit a race out... get to cool down, have a seat, etc etc.. Except during the V8's when all members must be suited up and standing by...

And yea, lots of water is always consumed ... normally a pretty warm 4 days !!

Answeres as per strikeathird!

A Training day is held prior to the event (for non motor sport fire and rescue crews) and new marshalls, other than that most are fire fighters either career or volunteer and have a wealth of experience

Wouldn't say there is tension - there is always readiness and being prepared should an event occur, however having done all of the Clipsals, LeMans, couple of F1's and also the Indy have only had to react a handful of times and only once pulled the pin on an extinguisher - that said, you are aways on your feet watching and waiting.

As for water, I drink more in a day during these events than I would normally in a week!

How'd it go Oz and Striker?

Were the MFS there in case the re-fuelling area's caught on fire?

strikeathird

MEts have appliances there for any thing INSIDE the centre ..eg.. Not on track.. So if a pantech caught alight.. Mets would tend to it.. If a food thing caught alight.. Mets would attend to it..

They also have an appliance and a foam dump in the centre incase something MAJOR happens... eg.. the Fuel stores, or something like that goes up..

They dont go on track tho.. WFW fire units carry Hydrolic Rescue tools, and Rescue 5 carries Heavy Rescue..

I guess if they were REALLY required.. for a MASSIVE rescue operaiton.. they could be used..

But cant see it happening..

Saw 2 near the fuel area's.  One was in the centre fuel area, close too the main arena.  Th eother by the old granstand.  Also saw the little MFS unit, the grass fire one near the track.  Where were you situated?
