it is a particularly annoying thing to happen, there captain has got it right, and CFS SOP is to default at 6mins....not 30mins

Isolaters do get used....its a matter of drivers remembering to turn them off.   A good idea for brigades to go through is a  Truck shutdown checklist after everytime the appliance is used....goes through everything like  "what is the current fuel level...IF  under 5/8ths  ring  so and so to arrange a time for a driver to take it for a refuel".  good old prompting.

With trickle charger cables hanging next to the vehicle & not being able to plug it in to the truck until the isolator is turned off - don't need a check list.
By the way we did learn this lesson the hardway
Also we wouldn't wait until tomorrow to jump start it - it would be done immediately even if it meant getting a nearby unit to provide the power
Anyway it proves we are all humans
cheers

Yes trickle charges and isolators are supposed to be used. And I know for one thing, I would not be wanting to wait till tomorrow. but each to there own.

Zippy, it is the drivers responsibility to make sure the truck has enough fuel. 3/4 of a tank is the min. in my brigade. After a job if the fuel is low, or we are passing a servo, we fill up. It sould not be left up to some one else to fill. Last to drive, fills up.

We used to use trickle chargers on our trucks but found that it was shortening the lifespan of the batteries alot so we just isolate them now.

Trickle charging does affect battery life, but does allow for the fridge (if you are lucky enough to have one) to be left on to ensure cold drinks always available - very important for the more 'remote' brigades and locations.

We use  Trickle charging with a timer inbuilt to the charger, it first test the battery if needed it charges if not it does nuthing. Checks the battery every day around midnight and midday, so far no problems with the battery's.

We use these http://www.projecta.com.au/catalogue/cid/5/asset_id/31/
Have had no problems with batteries. Mounted on the wall with a retractable cable to plug into the appliance.

we use the trickle charger and as it is either being charged or outside with the engine running or isolated battery life doesn't seem to be a problem.

Might not be good, but it's certainly amusing!

We had it happen at our brigade and I thought it was rather embarrassing!

I remember my brigade being unable to start the truck one wednesday night when we were about to go out on a truck run and were paged to a tree over road that year the South East had a supercell storm
