Rural Fire Prepardness.

Hi there all

I would like to ask a question to the forum.  I reside within a rural area (High fire risk during the summer periods).  As many can vouch there is allot of people opting for the rural life with a small parcel of land and resident (great country living)

I was asked the other day by our neighbors to show him what we have in place(Fire Prevention wise)as he was aware I work within the Emergency Services Industry.  I showed him our two fire pumps, ample water storage good clear fire breaks around house etc, with sprinklers and fire hose reals at two locations around our house.

With this there also has to be training & Maintenance, the pump must start and pump water - power isolation (roof mounted solar power)

This prompt him to ask the question "is there business who can help people like him to better prepare themselfs" - some would say "leave" this is up to the individual but is there anyone whom can professionally help people like this.

He did visit his Regional CFS Office whom gave him a lovely glossy pamphlet - but what he needs is some one to visit his home to give him some advise -to better prepare themselfs, and I assume there would be allot others in similar situations.

What area of SA do you live in FIREFIGHTER_SA... i live in the Lower South East and down here we have various businesses who can visit residential & industrial areas and give advice on what fire fighting equipment would be best suited for in your neighbors case rural area living

When it came to me installing an ex CFS fire hose onto my dads fire pump i called CHUBB Fire Safety and a guy came out to my place in Kalangadoo the very next day and gave me free advice on as well as fire hose fittings

It all comes down to what rural area of SA you live and what fire safety&equipment services are available there

Below is a few safety equipment providers in the South East who give advice as well site visits

* Safety Med Fire & Rescue
* CHUBB Fire Safety
* Green Triangle Fire Protection

the list goes on so all your neighbors has to do is look in the yellow pages under Fire Protection Equipment & Consultants

Your best bet would be Fire and Rescue Australia. They specialise in domestic fire protection and home bushfire protection systems. They also have a great system could the Mobile Firefighter.

You will also find that there has been a large bucket of funding come through for this particular subject.

They can contact the RO and ask for the Community Blitz crew to come to their area and arrange for neighbours to join in..

If only we can get more people to be prepared, it will make our jobs much easier..and their properties safer!

It is unbelievable how many are already not prepared for the season..and this is many that experienced Black Tuesday..maybe they think that it won't happen to them 2 years in a row..

community blitz not here in the south east,lets face it most fire services have members who work in fire protection and we all have our favorites but I say to people shop around,I work for a firm that is cheaper and willing to help anyone with what ever needs that they may need to provide fire protection to farmers or to householders.Dont always go for the big firms as they are often very costly.

As for the community blitz crew - We have never seen them as we don't live within the Adelaide Hills area.

As a suggestion maybe they should do some county trips to either field days or local shows for the general public to see what they have to offer.

I did ask sometime ago about getting the team down here region five over summer and was informed sorry no,unless there is a major fire then they will come down. Ok so we have to wait till we have a fire before they come on down.

Sounds silly to me...
