SAAS Pain Relief in the Country

Hi all,

This was an issue raised about six years ago regarding the use of medicine to help patients with pain relief. The main issue was that paramedics were prohibited from administering morphine; in turn being forced to use penthrane - a temporary solution to a permanent problem.

Hopefully this issue has been resolved (I dont know whether it has), and paramedics are able to administer sufficient pain relief in the country without having to wait for an LMO or an IC.

This leads to my last question: Should volunteers with advanced training be able to administer better pain relief in country areas if no IC, paramedic (if the use of morphine has been allowed) or LMO is available?

Would love to here your thoughts - especially volunteers

i know of a couple RN's who were or are cert 4 vollies and they are able to carry and use morphine on their saas shifts.

All Paramedics can provide morphine or Fentanyl. There are a few Doctors who are vollys in their spare time and can apply for authority to give the same. My understanding is they still consult as well.

Mmmm... agree with sapolpd. Paramedics carry and administer morphine.
