Hi new to this forum just after some info on the when the next intake maybe?
Im a retained firie in the NSWFB and very keen for a move to permanent ranks, Ive been trying with the nswfb but it sounds the same as the samfs it just takes time im also a qualified electrician in my primary job.
Will having 5yrs experience help when it comes to recruitment in the SAMFS???
SAMFS would be my choice of fire service as Adelaide is like a second home for me and I have real estate in glenelg so moving isnt a problem.

Alan (Big Al)

5yrs experience won't count for anything as they have knocked back firies who are currently in fulltime paid ranks interstate.

Only advice is to try

and try some more

and some more after that

and perhaps a few more times after that

Although 5 years experience wont give you any automatic advantage over anyone else, it will give you an advantage if you get to the interview stage of selection as you will be able to relate your answers to the experiences you have had as a retained firey.

Permanents being knocked back that is crazy,
I heard that having fire fighting experience is an advantage with the samfs,I have also had experience at 2 of the biggest fire stations in nsw being Station 1 City of Sydney and 27 Parramatta.

I think in QLD previous experience is taken into account. Pretty sure it isnt in the SAMFS. With the amount of people that apply for the number of positions available it is almost like a raffle. How can they interview over 150 people, most interviewed by a different panel of people and expect to compare candidates equally. At a guess i would say the next call for applications would be early to mid next year

Zippy

Its rigged....  just putting that out there to fry ;)

Just reading the SAMFS website it says you could be posted to stations out of Adelaide if successful, just wondering how what sought of chance do you have ending up out of adelaide if you are luck enough to get in??

Usually only one person at the most out of every recruit course gets sent out of Adelaide. A recruit course is 18 people and the 18th ranked person from the selection process will be told that if they accept a job then there is a good chance they will be going to Port Pirie. Which is about a 2.5hr drive out of Adelaide. People who are posted there often live in Adelaide because they work a 24hr shift on duty followed by 72 hrs off and is not too far of a drive. I am pretty sure it is a 2 year posting

Alan (Big Al)

Nice to see Pirie get the so called "Dregs"

Why does the SAMFS require its recruits to have a Heavy Ridgid licence straight away.
Most other services only require medium rigid to begin with then if you are stationes at a Bronto stn then you can apply to become a Bronto Operator.

Some services only require a normal car licence and then they will train you themselves.

Maybe it is a way of having less people apply? Or to make sure you are really serious about application due to cost difference in MR to HR

You would think they would want more people applying to give them more applicants to choose from???  It would be interesting to hear from someone that might know what the reasoning is for that change.

Pipster

I don't think they'd want more applicants to wade through.....I vaguely recall something like over 1000 applicants for less than 100 positions...!

There are three types of people in the world.  Those that watch things happen, those who make things happen, and those who wonder what happened.

There is no problem with getting numbers for applications. I think most years they get 600-700 apply for maybe 36 or 54 positions. HR could possibly be required for the POD trucks and some of the larger aerial appliances and saves the SAMFS paying for extra licenses
