SA to help Perth recover from damaging storm
Wednesday, 24 March 2010

Only weeks after the South Australian State Emergency Service (SASES) sent crews to Victoria, they are sending another deployment to Western Australia in the wake of a wild thunderstorm that hit Perth earlier this week.

There have been almost 3000 calls for SES assistance since Monday, with about 1200 jobs still outstanding. Perth has experienced extensive damage caused by flooding and hail damage to roofs and windows, as well as trees falling on homes, cars, fences and roads.

South Australia will be sending 17 volunteers specialising in storm and flood damage and one staff member. In addition, the New South Wales and Victorian SES will also be deploying volunteers.

SASES Deputy Chief Officer Matt Maywald says that the South Australian crew will fly to Perth early tomorrow morning and are likely to remain there until Sunday. He praised the enthusiastic response from volunteers willing to travel across the country at short notice to help their interstate counterparts.

“Within only a couple of hours of receiving the call for assistance from the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia, we were able to pull together a SASES task force,” said Mr Maywald.

“It comes as no surprise to me that we have had volunteers from right across the state put their hand up for another interstate deployment.

“The SES frequently plays a critical role in supporting communities and other emergency service organisations and there is a firm agreement in place between the SES in all states and territories that we help each other in times of need.

“We are one big family and we enjoy working together. If South Australia was faced with such an emergency, I know our interstate colleagues would be right here with us, helping us to protect and defend what is important to us.

“The assistance provided from interstate crews really does speed up clean-up efforts and helps local crews get through the backlog of jobs. Our volunteers really do put in an outstanding effort.”

Another large $$$ bill from Melbourne & Perth storms.

Then add Queensland floods, Tropical cyclone damage in Queensland & Northern territory.

Yep...storm & flood incidents are un-important

Perth storm bill could top Melbourne's

THE damage bill for last week's hail storm in Perth could top the $880 million in claims for Melbourne's flash flood in January, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) says.

There have been 89,000 claims totalling $650 million so far in Western Australia, according the council, but it says these figures are likely to rise further.

"The industry is working as quickly as it can to process claims," an ICA spokeswoman said today.

"With the initial rush over, we're now getting the next wave.

"We are still taking calls and processing claims, so (it) is likely (the total will climb above $650 million)."

The hail storm devastated Perth and the south-west when it hit late in the afternoon on March 22, blacking out about 200,000 homes and businesses, damaging thousands of cars and flooding roads and residences.

The initial cost was estimated at $100 million, but this quickly rose as claims continued to pour in, the ICA said.
