A FIRE in South Australia's South-East has jumped a containment line.

The fire was started yesterday by a lightning strike near the Little Desert Conservation Park outside Frances, about 40km south of Bordertown, and was contained late on Sunday.

It broke through a containment line about 11am today on the southwest edge of the fire perimeter, and is burning in scrub on private property next to the Wolsley to Mount Gambier railway line.

About 30 CFS volunteers and eight Department of Environment and Heritage personnel with two fixed-wing aircraft are fighting the fire as it burns in a northerly direction towards the conservation park.

The Country Fire Service issued the following warning:

"The CFS advises that a fire at Bangham Scrub, 7km north of Frances adjacent to Little Desert National Park, is causing smoke to drift across Bangham area and may be visible from some distance.

"While this fire does not present any threat to residents in the Bangham area, residents are advised to close all doors and windows and stay indoors if you suffer from any respiratory conditions.

"Road users are advised to use caution on the roads as smoke may significantly reduce visibility in the area. Firefighters are attending to this fire."

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Fire Service put out a small grass fire a next to the Southern Expressway at Trott Park about 1pm.

It is not known how the fire started and only a small area was burnt.
