Most important tool on the truck.

So, CFS/MFS/SES what is, in your opinion, the most important tool on your truck?

Brain, goes without saying, and is the usual smartarse answer :P

I'm going to say Halligan, just becuase of the unlimited number of uses it has around the place.


And yes, I'm more than a little gay for my little metal buddy! :D

Wuz gunna say the one in the front left seat, but you've already covered that.

Next most important would be the pump (& water). Without that, may as well take private vehicles to jobs. Just about everything else can be found in someone's car boot or on a roof-rack or shed.

If we are talking strictly tools then I would go for an Akron branch or three. The my next favourite kit is a well stocked rapid intervention kit for road jobs.

I'd go with the driver (who actually has the brain, can drive the truck safely and competently) and the firefighters in the truck.
Hoses that work properly would also be something handy

(You're right about the 'Tool' part though)

I think the most important tool on the truck would have to be the hoses and branches. Its impossible to do what we do without them. They also have their uses in other places like rescue.

Without getting into a ford vs holdens or TFT vs Akron..... :-P Have you used both Gilly and prefer TFT or is TFT the main branch you are used to??

I've only used the automatic TFT branches and I hate them with a passion. I'm an Akron man through and though.

Someone in our brigade did order us some other brand of branch. Can't for the life of me think what they were now. But they also fell into the terrible basket.

It produces a better stream across the range, and produce an awesome fog pattern, and works better with lower flows and pressures, still providing a decent stream de to the automatic apeture. They are also low maintenance and seem a higher quality. we use both the 10-125 and the 50-350 and both sizes work very well.

Disagree on some points.  When a TFT has enough pressure, it is certainly a simpler branch to use - volume & pattern controls only.  However a manual branch eg Akron can often be persuaded to work at very low pressures when TFT simply can't produce more than a trickle.  Like at the end of 16 lengths of 25mm up a hill off a GAAM-300, or direct off a hydrant that someone else is using further down hill.

At "normal" pressures, the flow around the TFT's bullet valve is technically superior to the Akron's ball valve. The control-freak in me likes to to tell the branch what I want it to do rather than the other way around...  So my preference is manual.  Akron, Protek, Fogmaster.  Allasame me. Squirtim plenty good water.
