Brothers in Arms or Competing branches of SAFECOM?
« on: March 07, 2008, 07:12:11 PM »
When I first joined the SES I was under the understanding that the ESO' were all part of the same umbrella group who's aim was to protect society from both Natural & Manmade threats & to reduce the impact of those threats.
However since that time I have discovered that while the vast majority of individuals within those service have the same understanding as I, there are some who for what ever reason don't think this is so.
What I'm wondering is - do I have it wrong? Why do these individuals have this view? What motivates these individuals to take the piss out of the other services?
Is it jealousy? Envy? Want to work for money?
I know we are not perfect, however our teams have proved they are equal to the other SES's around the country & compete well against the fire services doing tasks we both do. We are also working very hard to improve our service, however what is the point? Especially when the members of other services continually point the finger, make comment when not in possession of all of the facts, and generally belittle every single thing we do!
I'm really starting to wonder why bother, pressure from state/ government to "run like a business", and criticism from our comrades in the other services.
In a few months I will be leaving this state, taking with me a fair bit of practical knowledge and specialist skills (Including trainer/ assessor & Management skills).
One of the dilemmas I'm facing is do I want to really be bothered doing this any more?
So are we Brothers (&sisters) in arms or competing tribes?
cheers & have a good one :-)

wouldnt take anything said on this forum personally in terms of opinions...just a general rule ;)

Remember the views of one person will definitely differ from another, people clash, the discussion generated is just these clashing views on topic's, giving each other a chance to see each others point of view.

we have to work together, and in most cases...its people trying to help people improve in what they do.

thats it from me, off to the whiskey ;)

Mate, for the record, I will criticize who I see fit, be they SAMFS, SACFS or SASES.
To think they employed me as a drooling retard...

Chook , just finished reading this post and other posts for the day.  A few things seem fairly obvious , firstly your analogy the "competing tribes" is reasonably apt , but from my point of view the analogy that I would use is the "suckling pigs" with SAFECOM being the unwieldy fat(and getting fatter) sow lying on its side, while all the piglets (ESOs) are forced to compete for the nipple. Perhaps this competing/niggling between the services at our lower level is just a reflection of what we see higher up the food chain . Or maybe reading Charlottes Web as a child affected me? :-).
As for the rivalry/banter between the services, I believe it will always be there ,my advice is evaluate the negative comments ,discard the crap and use the rest to better your service delivery.
In working with other services at minor incidents, I find myself sometimes standing back and wondering ,why they do somethings a "different" way. But at you larger/campaign style incidents we all tend to sing from the same page and interservice harmony for the most part is excellent, dont forget the 6%ers though.
Now to your questioning of is the battle worth it! Thats for you to answer, but with just asking that question , I think you've already answered it.

My thought ,theres two forces at play here.

1 People that give you shite(us, we'd buy you a beer)

2 People that give you shite and no funds(them, back of the neck kissers)

Cheers Jaff

People volunteer for various reasons & their motivations are interesting to discover. Many people cannot explain why they volunteer for a dangerous and unpleasant job.

It will depend on the reasons for the individual who volunteers (and writes on this forum) has to what response you will get. Remember this forum currently has 682 members and a majority who do not post. So you could be close to the 6% from Carney's Leadership course on this forum !!

Some will join and post to get a reaction, some are young and think they can do everything ( they need to grow up) and alot think the more 'boys toys' you have in the shed the better social status you have.

At the moment many things are about to change and people are nervous of change. They want to keep or increase their individual/combined influence. Look at the UFU and others..

The closest explaination of why people volunteer is to use 'Maslows Hierarchy of Needs' theory which is part of Management studies. A Google search will give you details of the theory and pyramid. One site is http://tutor2u.net/business/people/motivation_theory_maslow.asp

It happens a lot between SES Units. Sometimes it is really prominent and at other times it is a very co-operative environment between everyone.

Keep hitting your head against the wall, it does fracture a little when someone learns a little more...

But also look at yourself and try to discover why you volunteer.....Then you will know if the current or new opportunity will satisfy that need.

Very deep guys, which is what I would expect from a very loaded question, answered by intelligent individuals.
Loved the sucking piglets thing -very apt ed, I think some times some payed staff fuel the feud to protect their own position.
Numbers I will never deny some ones right to speak their mind, as long as it isn't to justify a hidden agenda!
Anyway guys time to close (been sitting in a rescue boat all day watching very fast boats going around & around) not really in the mood for the deep stuff.
cheers & thanks
