I heard the guys and gals at Northern SES last night doing radio checks using the callsign of 'Edinburgh 41' 'Edinburgh portable' etc etc.

Is this a change in unit name for the team or was it just a once off ??

haven't heard any name changes they might just be testing to see what it sounds like but i cant see why the name change if they did it would have to be "Edinburgh park" as that is there location.

Yep they changed mid January, an email was sent to all metro Units, extract below

Just advising you that as of the 17th of this month it was decided by the unit that the name of the unit will be changed from Northern Districts to Edinburgh S.E.S.

Also if possible can you send the message out to all units informing them of the name change as well as informing MFS so that when we communicate to them they know who they are talking to and which areas that we will respond to when the jobs come in....

Thanx for all your help...

Elizabeth West to be precise.
Treat everyone as if they are an idiot, until they prove you otherwise.

No Edinburgh is fine - its a new page in the history of the unit.
Good on them, wish them all of the best for the future.

I believe there is some movements towards altering all unit names to reflect towns/suburbs...

B2: Your lot were talking about this not to long ago werent they??

chook

Is there any particular reason? Bonding with the community I guess.
Good idea except you guys cover several suburbs, not like us where we are linked to a major town.
Anyway at least when I go to Adelaide I know where to find you, the old names make it hard to pinpoint the location (I'm hopeless in Adelaide ).
Good luck with it & I hope the changes do what you expect them to do.

personally i think thats a good idea, and although its "just a name" it would probably assist other agencies in having a better idea of resources attending an incident and where they are coming from.

for example, Sturt SES... there is a suburb called sturt, however the unit is actually based in coromandel valley, about 7kms away (yes i know they have an appliance at Sturt SAPOL however this is not where there unit is "based")

It also got confusing sometimes when you had 'SES North Region' and 'SES Northern Districts Unit' active.

Some of the existing names were allocated when local councils supported the SES Units. Thus Metro South had council support of Brighton, Marion and Mitcham council. They changed name from Mitcham SES to Metro South SES. I think the volunteers rejected their proposed name change.

Hopefully the short unit names will get fixed as well. eg MTB was for Adelaide Hills SES, now for Mt Barker SES. Really only affects the metropolitan based units.

My personal opinion only.

Yeah its all to make it easier to workout where units are from.
Adelaide Hills SES is meant to be Mt Barker SES, but we still get correspondence from above to Adelaide Hills so we float between the two names.
A few other units had name changes as well i thought, I will try and find the full email at the unit.

Yep doesn't affect us in the "sticks" as we were already named after the town (except Wattle Range? now Millicent) anyway its still a good idea.

so Edinburgh SES is in Edinburgh west when it is east of Edinburgh and if CFS is linked to one "major town" how come there are names like muddla wirra and dalkeith??????????

chook

No one said any thing about CFS I think :?
Now all rural SES units are linked to a town, as far as I know anyway.
Think its a great idea!

The post above said ELIZABETH WEST. Not Edinburgh West.

Their unit is located in Elizabeth West not Edinburgh since Edinburgh is the RAAF Base.

my partner works on the edge of Elizabeth west and Edinburgh park and we take bottles to Edinburgh west bottle yard which is across the road from Edinburgh SES.

That makes no sense at all since Elizabeth west is East of the RAAF Base.

If there was Edinburgh West it would be west of Edinburgh, wouldn't it. And that would place it on the other side of the base altogether towards Waterloo corner.

As far as I can tell the SES unit is in Elizabeth West. :|
