I showed the photos to a friend who tows a similar style boat (ski with inboard motor).

Do we assume correctly the the boat was not shackled at the back or the front of the trailer ?

I can see the back guide post bent over & that the trailer twisted at the front join.

Any ideas what caused the trailer to jack knife (eg trailer brakes, blown tyre, etc). It seems a flat section of road.

Trying to understand how the boat came off the trailer & the only idea we have is that the boat was only held by the front winch & its weight on the trailer.

My personal opinion only.

From what was said at the scene he was coming down the hill and it got the sways up,and as per usual car and trailer jacknifed, and the car ended up facing the wrong direction and trailer went into the safety barrier getting caught under all 4 strands. As a result the front winch cable snapped leaving the hook attached to the front of the boat, and the boat slewed off the trailer over the safety rail and landed as you see it.

so sounds like no shackles at the back holding the boat.  A bit like the one I saw on the freeway a few months back, guy towing a car trailer with a car on it. He had apparently decided it wasn't necessary to tie down the car on the trailer just put the handbrake on.  Pity when he braked going down the hill (from Crafers towards town) the car on the trailer slid forward off the front of the trailer and smashed in the boot of his towing car.
