Hi Everyone,
I have just been speaking to an old "Digger" mate I know who has been in the CFS for years. We were talking about the old days and I ended up asking him "why CFS trucks are painted white? he then told me it was because white was easier to obtain than pink, which was the colour everyone wanted back then.

Did you guys know about this? Should we try and go back to this colour?

A bright pink would stand out more in the smoke, traffic etc than white

Cheers

CFA used to have pink apliances that where for perm/vol brigade's they did stand out well but very expensive to repaint and they did fade faster then the red ones....

CFA did have a handful which were a garish colour! I think they were a limited run of medium pumpers? And that particular style was only allocated to the larger, very busy brigades - the so-called 'integrated' brigades which had both permanent fireys and volunteer fireys.

That colour scheme didn't last long! Back to good old RED. (IMO one of the worst colours for visibility, but if it's what the public associate with 'fire' then why change?)

Brigade-owned stuff until recently has allowed to be either red or white, but I seem to recollect that CFA have now instructed that all appliances with fixed fire-fighting bodies must be red. (That would exclude the small 4WD cab-traybacks with a slipon tank and pump, which may be white.)

PS. Whilst QF&RS have red trucks (with red & blue lights) in the urban stations, their rural counterparts (who are in fact a division of QF&RS) are limited to yellow trucks with 'red only' warning beacons. And doesn't that difference in standards pi$$ the rural members right off!

TFS used to have some lime green pumpers.....

How about we have fire trucks the same colour as the Forestry SA Fire Kings  :-)

For info it was Fred Kerr who decided that all CFS trucks would be white, this was back when there was mixture of Red, White, Yellow and Green trucks around the state. There was a big debate at the time over Red V White but Kerr did some investigation and found that White was the most visible.

yeh... im not quite sure why though as i posted a reasonable reply.

Fred Kerr was right, multiple studies have all indicated that white painted vehicles are easier to be seen than red. Although lime green scored very highly as well. Combine white with some retroreflective strips and you get an appliance that can be seen in most conditions i.e night/day/fog/smoke.

You didn't get in trouble your post just happened to be above the one that closed the thread. Mack you often make a lot of sense and I am unlikely to close threads because of you....Apart from if there is blatant swearing.

firefrog - no problems then, didnt think i had done anything much to warrant it. the thread had gone a fair bit off track before my post. ;)

I had read some interesting articles of late regarding Visual Psychology (that's right, there are such things as Visual Psychologist!).  White vehicles are researched as being the most overtly recognisable colour on Australian Roads, however the percentage of white vehicles, trucks, cars, etc incurs a certain level of commonalities.  Other emergency services throughout the world have recognised this and you would note that in the UK the base line colour for most Ambulances is Yellow or Silver (for response cars).

With saying this, white is also probably the most cost effective colour to purchase as most, if not all vehicle manufacturers would have a white baseline model available.  The MFS in the 1990s brought a number of Isuzu 500 Dual Cabs as a light pumper body, and had to have them repainted, at a significant cost to the tax payer.  So I at the end of the day can see the justification of white vehicles.

However... Personal view, and being one who like to stand out of the crowd!  I like the ACTFB fleet colour, fluro yellow/green.  Definitely Stands Out

Also, the back of the new SAAS ambulances have the yellow/green V's which standout. Not sure if they standout because they are so different to anything else currently on the road or the colours.

yeh im pretty sure thats the only reason.....  lol

the new colours on the ambulances look good IMO, but i get the feeling from a few mates on the job that they have caused some controversy...

fireblade

I think they look good white plus all the other advantages listed i.e. cost, visibility, ease to repair the colour if paint work is required.

I think the only other paint that would look good would be whit on top of red similar to Q.F.R.S. that look o.k. in my opinion!

Lets go right out there and paint them Teal.  :-D :-D :-D
