Vertical rescue at Stirling
« on: June 29, 2007, 11:26:29 AM »
I have seen the Channel10 news footage of the Rescue of a 60yr old male person from the water tank. He was working on the SA Water tank roof when he fell in. The water tank was empty.

Great to see SES and CFS working together. The news report stated 20 personnel at the scene.

From the footage I could see a ladder derick formed against the concrete side of the tank. The rope fed through pulleys to the hauling crew which included other bystanders.

My personal opinion only.

Interesting to see a SES State Rescue Officer standing on the top of the ladder without any PPE or even gloves on. Only a tabard and a helmet, setting a great example there boss.

Apart from that it looked like a good effort by those involved, even though it was a pretty shitty job.

Just a minor detail mack :P

For those wondering, the bronto couldn't get access to the tank, so couldn't be used...

seems to me the ladder derrick would have been a better option anyway considering the circumstances

one would have thought that anyone on scene could have realised that.. from my understanding the request for the bronto came from someone that did not have an accurate sitrep and was not on scene.

anyway; if you can do a ladder derrick safely and effectively with the crew and equipment on scene, why call for more resources?

I'm not in a position to comment on who requested the Bronto and why, however, in response to your comments:

Not everyone knows that the Bronto can't drive on dirt roads or dirt driveways...

I believe the request was made by the IC, soon after arrival...

The Bronto was requested very early on in the incident - well before the SES had arrived (or we even knew they'd been responded).  If you're suggesting 205 should not have been responded, this is not true, using 205 as a high redirection would have been ideal. :)

Yes, an almost identical rescue (also by Stirling) at the Heathfield water treatment plant.  (Identical being a man fallen into big concrete tank...)

was merely suggesting given the circumstances it may not have been required. i am well aware of its advantages in differant situations..
