Probably shouldn't insinuate unless you were at the job . This may (and all reports suggest it was) have been a complicated job.

Man killed in house blast

The police bomb squad in South Australia is trying to find the source of an explosion which has destroyed a house and killed a 44-year-old man at Williamstown on the fringe of the Barossa Valley.

A series a small explosions have continued to rock the street where the man lived.

Regional fire commander John Hutchins says it has been too dangerous for fire officers to fight the blaze.

Neighbour Angela Klyne says a large explosion rocked the street at about 9.30am ACDT today.

The man suffered burns and lost his right arm in the explosion. He later died.

The Aussies lost deliberately, they felt so sorry for the poms they had to let them win one game against them this summer.
Anyway back to the topic, its one of those things you don't really know before you roll if your only going to be doing external attack. In this case would have been good to know, would have picked my nomex to wear hands down.

Really - you would choose nomex to a structure fire with explosions reported. No way known anyone could convince me to wear nomex at a job like that......

The key here is officers having enough resource to rotate people and allow time to dress down re-hydrate and shed some heat...

Could not agree more..  Sure, it maybe a little uncomftorable in the heat, but sometimes I think people forget that the job is not always going to be easy, and 'stress free' on the body.. It's a tough gig! 

Thats why we maintain pre-hydration, (not just in summer either).. certain levels of fitness, continual training.. Prepare for jobs as such.. & as firefrog said, its then up to the officers at the job to ensure crew longevity and safety.. & up to the entire crew to look out for one and other!

I only would pick it if i knew there was no internal attack, but that never happens, so it would have been pbi.

Certainly was a big and complex job.  The request for all the extra BA was definitely due to the hot weather (to allow for rotation and minimal time in a set) and that all fire fighting had to be done in BA as access was restricted so firies were always in close proximity to the structure even when external.  No room for monitors on this one!
